On Jim MacBrayne, author of multiple public domain Commodore text adventures including The Golden Fleece, The Holy Grail and The Black Tower. I contacted him in June 2018 after coming across a 1989 interview. According to the interview penned by The Grue (Geoff Rens) in Adventure Probe issue 03/11, Jim played his first adventure game in 1981 and, after establishing a friendship with Rob Watts, one of the authors, he was persuaded to have a stab at writing an adventure himself. Jim developed a love of Infocom's work and when he moved on to coding games for the Amiga, the extra memory and power Hisoft BASIC provided allowed him to produce adventures in a similar style. "It's a long time since I wrote these adventure games and I can't remember all the details, but I do know that they were originally written around the late '80s and ported to TADS around 1995. They were all originally written in BASIC for the Commodore machines and I believe that I've still got the original files on floppies in the drawer at my side (whether the floppies are still readable or not is a different matter). I also have my original AMIGA in the loft, but haven't had it switched on in years." Excalibur was the first game that Jim wrote. "Excalibur goes back a lot further. I can remember very little about it, and I do not have any code in my possession. I notice that the screenshot [on the Classic Adventure Solution Archive site] is listed as Grana Software, and dates from 1983 (when I was 41 years of age ?? ). The owner of Grana was a swede named Peter Tegelberg, and I still have him as a friend on Facebook. He now is based in London as far as I know, but don't think he now has anything to do with computers." A retired general practitioner from Glasgow, Jim's hobbies now include photography and handcrafting (truly beautiful!) classical guitars.
