Introduction =============================================================================== Made in 1982 for the Apple II, Time Zone was the sixth Hi-Res adventure made by On-Line Systems (later known as Sierra Entertainment). The game is by far the largest and most ambitious of all the Hi-Res adventures, taking over a year to create and featuring well over 1,000 different locations spread over 39 time zones. The game did not sell well when it was first released due to a very high retail price of $99, and then when the price was lowered to a more reasonable amount the game had lost much of its initial popularity. This is a shame, as Time Zone is actually a well written game that is enjoyable to play through providing you know which locations to go to and what objects to use. If you don't know where to go and what to do in the game, Time Zone can quickly transform from being quite fun to very frustrating. This is due to the fact that the game must be completed in a very strict order. Important objects that are taken from one Time Zone can disappear forever if you try to take them back to a different Time Zone, making the game impossible to complete. Deaths occur very frequently for such things as moving to the wrong location, not having the correct item or entering the wrong command. There are also a vast number of red herring locations (and even whole time zones) that you don't need to visit at all, making the game last even longer if you're not sure of what locations need to be visited. All this is merely annoying now, but it must have been absolutely appalling back in the days when the disks (Time Zone was originally released on six double sided disks) had to be constantly swapped. I enjoyed playing Time Zone, but only after I'd mapped out all the locations, found out what all the items were used for and also which characters were important. Before that, the game was incredibly frustrating to play. I would recommend playing Time Zone if only to see one of the largest ever illustrated Interactive Fiction titles, and if you're using this walkthrough so you know where to go and what to do, to hopefully have a bit of fun playing it as well. =============================================================================== 2. Walkthrough =============================================================================== HOME ---- The game starts outside the house. LOOK to read about the strange dream. In the dream, a terrestrial guardian chose you to secure Earth's future by defeating the evil ruler of the planet Neburon. The guardian also offered you a machine that enabled you to move through time and space. Move NORTH to the field of dry grass to see a time machine. LOOK MACHINE to realise that it wasn't a dream at all. ENTER MACHINE. GET MASK. The oxygen mask can't be taken back in time or it will be lost, so it needs to be dropped outside the time machine. EXIT MACHINE to return to the field of dry grass. DROP MASK. ENTER MACHINE. SIT in the chair. EXAMINE BLUE dial to see the names of seven continents and one location in space: Europe, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, Asia, North America, South America and Interplanetary. EXAMINE ORANGE dial to see eight time zones: 400MilBC, 10000BC, 50BC, 1000AD, 1400AD, 1700AD, 2082AD and 4082AD. SET BLUE dial. When asked to what, enter any continent as they all lead to the same place in the time zone we are about to go to. SET ORANGE dial. When asked to what, enter 400MILBC. PULL LEVER to travel back in time to 400 Million BC. 400 MILLION BC -------------- EXIT MACHINE to arrive on the pretty green meadow. Move WEST, SOUTH twice and EAST twice to the cave entrance. Move EAST into the cave to avoid being caught by the pterodactyl. Move WEST and SOUTH to the jungle to see a pointed stick. GET STICK. Move NORTH, WEST twice, NORTH twice and EAST to the time machine. ENTER MACHINE. From now on, you don't need to enter commands to set the dials; just enter the location and time zone. SIT on the chair. Don't enter any continent as they all lead to the same place in the time zone we are about to go to. Enter 10000BC as the time zone. PULL LEVER. 10000 BC -------- EXIT MACHINE to arrive in the north/south canyon. Move NORTH to the rocky canyon. GET ROCK. Move NORTH, WEST and NORTH twice to the large tree. Climb UP the large tree to avoid the stampede. Move DOWN, NORTH, WEST and NORTH to the mountains. GET STICKS. Move SOUTH, EAST and NORTH to the sabertooth tiger. THROW STICK at the sabertooth tiger and he will run away. Move EAST and SOUTH to see a large hare. THROW ROCK at the hare to kill it. GET HARE. Move EAST and NORTH three times to enter the cave. GIVE HARE to the cavemen and they agree not to kill you. MAKE FIRE with the two small sticks and the cavemen will offer their hammer to you. GET HAMMER.
