Book and Volume
By Nick Montfort
For Z-code interpreters

Solution by Garry Francis
----------------------------------------
This is a minimal solution to a very hard game. You'll need to EXAMINE lots of things for this
solution to make sense.

At the beginning of the game, you are given five tasks to complete. These are relatively
straightforward, but when you've completed them, you're given another task. As time goes
by, you're given another task...then another...then another... There are ten tasks in total,
but you do not need to complete them all to complete the game. The tasks are:
- Reboot Nora
- Reboot Ester
- Reboot Sophie
- Reboot Wendy
- Reboot Cindy
- Download, build and install crucial update.
- Reset and deliver Gus' password
- Turn off the hacked server
- Replace defective disk
- Destroy defective disk

Type SCORE to see how many tasks you've completed. Type FULL to see which tasks have been
completed and which are yet to be completed. The tasks achieved are indicated in the solution in
brackets.

Note that the servers are located in the area indicated by their first letter, i.e. Nora = North,
Ester = East, Sophie = South, Wendy = West and Cindy = Centre. Later in the game, you'll find
an extra server at F9 and a dummy server at F2.

Time plays an important role in this game. The time is shown in the status bar, providing you have
your pager with you. The game starts at 9:05 p.m. on Sunday night. Most moves take two minutes. If
you don't reboot all five servers within a reasonable time, your boss fires you.

The map is quite large, so it takes a long time to explore and map nTopia. Mapping is made extremely
difficult because a lot of commercial establishments are not open 24 hours per day. For any that
aren't open 24 hours, the opening and closing times are shown on my map. Those that aren't
accessible at all are also shown on the map, so that you know not to waste your time trying them.

As the game draws on, you will get hungry and need to find some food. There's plenty of eating
establishments around, but some of them don't open until around 10:00 or 11:00 a.m. You will
also need to get some sleep, but you'll need to go back to your home to do that. Alternatively,
you can keep topping yourself up with coffee, but that proves to be a pain if you're not in the
vicinity of a coffee shop and some of them don't open until 7:30 a.m.

The most significant of the timed events are:
- 9:05 p.m. Game starts
- 9:07 p.m. Pager buzzes, servers need rebooting
- 2:00 a.m. You get hungry (if you haven't eaten)
- 2:40 a.m. You get tired (if you haven't had any coffee)
- 3:00 a.m. You faint from hunger (if you still haven't eaten, game over)
- 5:00 a.m. You fall asleep (if you haven't slept or had any coffee, game over)
- 7:30 a.m. Pager buzzes, Gus needs password reset
- 9:00 a.m. Pager buzzes, random server needs rebooting
- 11:00 a.m. Civil alert system warns of impending storm, must stay indoors
- 11:27 a.m. Storm subsides
- 2:00 p.m. Pager buzzes, disk failure at F9
- 7:45 p.m. Escape canister ready to depart
- 7:53 p.m. Warning about demonstration
- 8:00 p.m. Demo commences, game ends

You will note that there are some long pauses between significant events. These are the times when
you should catch up on some sleep.

Whenever you're in the streets of nTopia, all sorts of weird and wonderful events occur at
random. These don't seem to have any bearing on the game other than add colour and suggest that
the population of nTopia is a bit looney.

As the game progresses, it becomes evident that all is not as it should be in nTopia and perhaps
there's a reason for the residents' looney behaviour. There are many hints towards this,
but you have to be in the right place at the right time to get some of these. For example (probably
not exhaustive):
- Knut gives you an important clue the first time you buy food.
- You overhear a conversation when you reboot Cindy.
- You overhear a conversation in Independent Grounds, which is later overtaken by Starbucks!
- If you're in a public place when the storm starts, a stranger gives you some important info.
- The teenagers in Pharmicopia hint at parallels with a Watchmen comic.
- Examining the Watchmen comic in Comic Command confirms this.
- The kid in Arcadia tells you more than he should.
- The message on the screen at F9 was not meant to be seen by you.
- Gus' behaviour borders on the psychotic.

There's also a number of red herrings. Most notably, if you get the nStick from the diorama at
City Hall, put it in the panel in the mechanical mouse at Proud Pie. The quotes would have made
sense when coming from the characters in the diorama.

Your pager is crucial, so keep it with you at all times. You need it to access any non-public
places, buy food and coffee, get the coin at the bank, get messages from your boss and, of course,
see the time.

Incidentally, there are two coins. The solution uses the one from the kiosk in the post office, but
you can also get one if you ASK TELLER FOR MONEY in the bank.
