Re: You are the hero - Fighting Fantasy gamebooks

Actually, Warlock of Firetop Mountain was a pretty limp first entry in the series - good thing the follow-up, Citadel of Chaos, was a stronger effort. But apart from Rebel Planet, I can't say that any of the computer games have impressed me much.

The funny thing is is that I also used my fingers ...

Re: You are the hero - Fighting Fantasy gamebooks

Ah.... memories :) I still have 6 or 7 of those stashed away somewhere. I tried getting my 10 y.o. daughter interested in the series - incidentally with Citadel of Chaos - but it didn't really catch on. In general the writing was quite uneven, but two of the sci-fi entries stand out: Starship ...

Re: Broken Sword on Kickstarter

I completed it a while ago (my wife and I have been playing through the entire series together). It's not the best in the series, but it's a perfectly fine entry. The visuals, atmosphere and tech side are all excellent, but the puzzles are generally too easy (almost all of them can be solved with ...

How your location affects your gaming experience

As part of my preparation for my recent trip to Southeast Asia, I downloaded a number of text adventures to my smartphone. And I have to admit that sitting in a cabin in the hot & humid jungle on Borneo while playing Babel really heightened the gaming experience. The chilly location descriptions ...

Re: Retro Gamer - anyone keeping track

The nostalgia angle is definitely overdone - and you're equally right that people who know Elite don't know a magazine article to tell them that it's a great game.
My core interest lies with the interviews. I'd love to read about the Austin Brothers, or the Mag Scrolls people, or even arcade ...

Re: Topologika / Acornsoft games

Okay. I can see that their official site says:
"Topologika was established by teachers Brian and Maddy Kerslake in 1987", but maybe they're referring to a later incarnation of the company. Let's see what Adam says.

Re: Topologika / Acornsoft games

Thanks for the clarifications, Richard.

Furthermore, were all three Doom games created on the Phoenix?
No, AFAIK none of them were; they were Topologika originals.
This leads to a question of chronology, which you may or may not be able to answer. When was Topologika set up? Countdown was ...

Re: Topologika / Acornsoft games

Furthermore, were all three Doom games created on the Phoenix?
And... according to Richard's Phoenix info in the IF archive, "There are also a few games which were only ever published by Topologika for the BBC B, such as Castle of Riddles". But AFAIK, Acornsoft published it, not Topologika. Or am I ...

Topologika / Acornsoft games

Assisted by Richard Bos, I've been going through the various T/SAL / Acornsoft / Topologika games.
From what I know, the Acornsoft ones are mostly cutdown versions of the T/SAL originals, whereas Topologika's releases replicate the complete games more fully.

Do all the Acornsoft versions differ ...

Re: Out of Date Emulator Links

Excellent - all updated and also found a few other emulators that needed updating.

One day when I have plenty of time and/or the week has two Fridays, I should really revamp this section. The Spectrum suggestions in particular are terribly outdated.

Alex should indeed be out there - but he travels a lot and doesn't visit here all the time, so thanks on his behalf :)
And I'll add your walkthrough to the archive.
