Re: Synopsis - what to aim for?

Don't worry, I'll only hold it against you and your family for the next seven generations. Give or take :)

Seriously, though, it was a start. I have to finish up my own reviews and hopefully this could persuade more people to join in the fun.

Re: Synopsis - what to aim for?

Actually, some other kind-hearted admin uploaded it in the end, so I'm completely innocent ;)

I did negotiate a bit back and forth with Mark, who wrote it, but he seemed fairly happy with it in its current form.

Re: Synopsis - what to aim for?

a full review, which gives a much better look at the writing, the puzzles etc.
Does it? So far, there is only one review on the site: http://solutionarchive.com/review/id,1/ . It's a review alright, because it gives a subjective account of the quality of the game, but it's not longer than a long ...

Re: Synopsis - what to aim for?

Dave, I'm not criticising. Just observing. I've used these blurbs myself. My aim with this post was simply to establish what our goal should be. Long? Short? Personalized angle? Package blurb? As I said above, it's better to have something than nothing, so keep updating and we can always adjust a ...

Re: Synopsis - what to aim for?

My point is that the time required for qualifying every game in its supposed synopsis would be better spent simply writing a few reviews. What is this option for anyway if all that subjective stuff can go into the synopsis anyway?

It's simply a matter of scope - we're talking five words vs. a ...

Re: Synopsis - what to aim for?

I wouldn't include what you call the 'personal angle'. This goes very much into review territory. Maybe game length, ok, but fun?
My aim is simply to add a few words to give a general indication of what type of game we're dealing with, without going into full-blown review territory. Perhaps "fun ...

Synopsis - what to aim for?

With the rapid growth of the database, I thought it appropriate to take a closer look at the synopsises. Personally I think they're one of the most important and useful parts of the database :) They are of wildly varying length and content at the moment. Given the size and quality of the games they ...

Certainly - I think it essential to understand the polarity of the debate :)
What do games and playing have to do with holy IF? That is reading! ;)

Re: Get Lamp

I believe it's a very polished and entertaining film, but yes, some of it may be a bit too familiar to anyone with more than a passing knowledge of the genre. Still, Scott Adams' anecdote about Adventureland (in the spoiler section) was completely new to me and put a huge smile on my face :)

It ...

Re: Starting guides for various platforms

Excellent - I'm still trying to decide where best to put these guides. But I have no doubt that they will be useful. Will write one for the C64, too.

Re: Bob Bates talking about his Infocom and Legend days

Thanks for the heads-up - I've listened to a bit of Bates' interview, and it sounds very promising :thumb:

Where is the Hülsbeck part? I'm a long time fan of his C64 and Amiga compositions and even have one of his cd's (which isn't exactly his finest hour)

Re: Starting guides for various platforms

Sam, regarding your input - I've turned down direct linking to games for a number of reasons. One of them is the fact that we all have a limited amount of time for projects such as this, and with the number of platforms and games we're trying to cover, I personally believe our resources are better ...

Re: Starting guides for various platforms

I think this is going off topic a little too much ;)
Definitely - I just thought that you might have a specific suggestion in this case ;) But let's get back on track.
Eriorg - excellent guide. Appreciate it!
Alastair - agreed. The starting guides shouldn't get overly complicated or nobody will ...

Re: Starting guides for various platforms

Also, the emulator's user interface is part of the guides as you suggested them, isn't it?
Oh, there's certainly nothing wrong with having some brief emulator instructions. Take that as icing on the cake. But the core information should be how to load software once the emulator is up and running ...
