Re: Platform distinction

Just a warning that there may be newbies or neophytes or dummies out there. You need to make the site/links navigable by all.
Fair enough. But since the available information will be the same for everybody, we'd lose a lot of valuable information if we had to make sure that everybody would ...

Re: Lost or unreleased game you'd love to play

IMO Douglas Adams ran out of steam during book 4. Mostly Harmless was more like Mostly Pointless. Maybe they should give the series a rest.
Should a new game come out, it won't be an adventure game. Perhaps a MMORPG?

Re: Platform distinction

Thanks for the the input. The # of mainframe games isn't substantial, but it's there. Still, splitting it into a number of platforms would seem to be going overboard. For instance, Adventureland lists four different PDP models, all more or less with the same games.

Changing the platform, Jacob ...

Re: Platform distinction

What about all the various mainframes? I can see that on some game sites, mainframes are divided into a plethora of platforms? But for our purposes, isn't it more useful to place them all in one group? I'm not all that familiar with those computers.

Re: Fixed games

Excellent idea. As the # of games in question must be limited, I don't see why we should be able to host those games. Please send them (or upload them, if you're one of the admins - I have created a suitable file type for these games).

Note I'm not talking about cheating on the games
No, I don't ...

Re: Penguin Software / Polarware

Yes, I understand your example and your points.
Again, it's not an easy decision. For companies like Penguin and Trillium, the name changed, but everything else (?) remained the same. Hence I think it would be a missed opportunity not to be able to see all their games listed together. As for seeing ...

Re: Penguin Software / Polarware

On second thought, the first solution isn't all that great either. When browsing through the company list, one of the two companies would show 0 games, which would probably keep most users from clicking on their link.

Re: Penguin Software / Polarware

My mistake, I meant "published".

Another alternative would be to have information on the company profile pages linking to the other names used by a company.
So, sticking with your example, would all the games then be listed under Polarware and the Penguin game list be empty, or would the games be ...

Re: Idea: browse for "unsolved"

I think the current tool is very useful and - hopefully - just what the doctor ordered :)

Furthermore, when you check this box, it also shows you games that actually HAVE been solved, but where just hints are provided. I'd say that as soon as hints or maps are available, it can be considered ...

Re: Idea: browse for "unsolved"

The coding team will figure out something. Let's see what we wind up with.

@Terri: yes, the ambition is to cover all games. As for "Help wanted", everybody is encouraged to use the "I am playing this" button. This will help you find other people struggling with the same game.
And yes, by "Games" I ...

Re: Penguin Software / Polarware

There are a few other companies that have followed this path. Gameworx/Softgold and Trillium/Telarium spring to mind. Re: your edited suggestion, I wouldn't know exactly what titles to place under which company when it comes to the companies I mentioned.
I talked to one of the developers, and as the ...

Re: Do "authors" include illustrators and musicians?

Hmmmm.... excellent question. My initial thought is "no". The core quality of the game still comes from the writing and the puzzles. Graphics and music is icing on the cake to me. But if anyone feels differently, please speak up.

Re: Games everybody should know

@Mark: well, "totally cool" might be a stretch :) As I remember it, you had to enter a code from the manual to receive the various hints. A bit cumbersome. The revised Infocom releases did this in a somewhat easier fashion.

@Alastair: good to see H2G2 in here. Personally I found the babel fish ...

Re: Games everybody should know

Yes, I'd probably go with Gremlins, too. It seemed to circulate heavily in, er, various backup copies ;)

For Magnetic Scrolls I'd favour Corruption over The Pawn (my personal preference).
Interesting. Excluding Myth, which wasn't in widespread distribution, I'd say that Corruption is probably the ...
