On a number of occasions I've used Facebook to track down various authors. So far it's worked pretty well, but lately I've run into the problem that users which I'm not friends with will not receive my messages. Apparently the messages just vanish into thin air.
This is potentially rather problematic, as I cannot know whether they don't respond because they're not interested or because they never received my message in the first place.

Does anyone know if there are any (new), devious FB settings which might cause messages to be blocked without the sender's (ie my) knowledge?
