I don't think so. Every time the game is played there are different objects available in full view. Hence my comments earlier - oil? rags?
I think that one needs to get rid of the obstacles to get other objects. Like I found the oil once I got past the rats. After getting the traps.
So if you can't get the traps, you will need to find the ladder first.
So, you have the wires - I don't. I keep getting the message that I can't reach them. Playing it the second time - I no longer have the hammer (presuming you need it to break the lock - if you have the torch have you tried burning the lock?). But I have the feather and you don't.
Presuming that the tied curved stick is a bow (and you don't need the feathers for an arrow), don't yet know where that can be used. Since you don't have the ladder, you can't get the traps and get whatever is waiting for you beyond the rats.
So I think there are, regardless of which "version" we play, a certain number of items in common that we should be able to use. I now have the torch items (long stick + rags (dipped in oil) + matches), the ladder for the traps (which got me the oil), the curved stick and string, the wood pole, the cabbage. I've tried every verb that's on the list to get the vines, or the wires, but nothing. I've tried using the torch with the dragon and the monster, but again nothing. Don't know if we need the pickaxe for anything else.
Maybe the rope is not yet available to either of us.
So it's simply a trial and error thing - my logic has eluded me.
Glad you got the stones - glad the hint was a good one - and the magic word and then the "image" of a rope. Hope you wrote it down. Now what would make an image "real"? Let's try eating the cabbage, though I can't imagine what that would do other than create flatulence. This game has to this point been devoid (thank god) of adolescent bathroom humour, but you never know. I think I'll try that. Otherwise what would a cabbage be useful for. Would the monster eat it? Or the dragon?
So it appears that we now both have the torch. The "obstacles" cannot be the wires or the rats, so they must be the dragon, lava, monster, plus whatever else I have forgotten.
Amby, I think we are entertaining at least one person out there, who seems to be just watching as we plod our way through this. Let's hope we emerge victorious, since no one is willing to join us. I'm glad I am on holidays, otherwise I would become a tad obsessed too.
And then some people have other hobbies, ones that bring pleasure to others, like photography, cooking...

Playing it the second time - I no longer have the hammer (presuming you need it to break the lock - if you have the torch have you tried burning the lock?.
I tried burning, oiling it with the rags, breaking it with the hammer... no luck thus far.
So, you have the wires - I don't
Actually, I dont have them either.
Let's try eating the cabbage, though I can't imagine what that would do other than create flatulence.
Yup, tried that, as well as trying to give it to the dragon and the spider I believe. And tried cooking it while holding the lit torch...
I'm curious to see what you find past Frankie's monster once you wave the torch...

OK - I'll try that. though what is it that you wave? TORCH? How do you light it? I don't think "torch" is recognized.
I thought that the wires were needed for the monster (that's what was needed in the other part - oh well).
BTW - have previously gotten in the door by entering the magic word. I can no longer do that. I wonder whether that's intentional, or a bug.

Made it past Frank's monster by waving the torch (well, of course the game doesn't recognize the word torch but you can wave long after tieing the rags to it, dipping them in oil, then burning the rags while holding the matches). This got me the hammer.
I got the magic word after collecting all the the gems (minus the gold one). Did you get something else?

OK. You got the hammer, I got the knife. With that I was able to USE KNIFE to ge the wires. But that does not appear to get me anywhere, as of yet. I still can't get past the door again and don't know how to use the wires. Maybe I need the short stick to make an arrow?
I'm going to bed and try again tomorrow. See ya.

Awfully nice of you, Terri. But I think I must decline. Apart from my busy schedule, I just started to attempt another german language adventure called Logan. It's on Jacob's Wanted list. So I just keep an eye on you two here, and watch if you screw up or not. Good luck anyway

Excuses, excuses!!!
A bit more progress, Amby.
With the hammer you can OPEN the rusted lock on the crate. No need to break it. You can then put what you find into somethiing edible and use it at the dragon. I'm pretty sure there is only one specific object to be found in the crate. Problem is the verb at the dragon's place.
At the lava you need the knife, wires, hook and pole. Tie the hook to the wires (or the pole), and then take the vines. That got me the hammer, but you will get something different.
So tell me what to do at the dragon's.
Now, I cheated a little. I opened up the city.exe file with Wordpad (open Wordpad, then click on city.exe). This will give you lots of phrases some of which tell you what to do. Many different ways of getting rid of the obstacles.
None of this is logical.

Although it is not in your list of verbs, the operative word at the dragon is THROW.
I'm afraid I may be at a dead end.
I am left with the spider. For that I think one needs a short stick (to make the bow and arrow with the sticky stuff), but I have no short stick and there is no other place that it can be except behind the spider.
So for all this random generation, it seems that the game can paint itself in a dead end.
So I hope you can finish it.
I suppose that I could play it all over once again, but I'll not really sure I want to. Plus I don't remember what object I had with me to go through the door to get the rope (which it is hoped has materialized by then) and I can't get through it.
This one "save" business is very tedious.
Let me know how you make out.

So tell me what to do at the dragon's
Throw cabbage.
So how I have found a pool of sticky substance. Havent' had a chance to investigate it yet.
I have no knife so I cant yet get the wires.

Well, I did play it again. This time no cheese, so can't get past the rats. And no sticky substance.
I think the sticky substance is for dipping the short stick in, then somehow attaching the feathers to make a bow and then do the spider in.
See if that works.
This is all speculation of course.
The knife is needed (with the wires and pole) to get across the vines.
I'm just as stuck as before, except I now have the spider and the rats to deal with.

OK I found the cheese.
At the sticky substance, I think you need to have the tied curved stick, the short stick and the feathers, then DIP. and look at the stick and the feathers. They should be attached to the short stick.
Then kill the spiders. You find bones there but don't know what to do with those.
However, I can't open the door.
I did before. So, either the game remembers this (and you can only do it once) , or one needs specific objects, or the gems need to be the last thing one does, or at least the last gem in the bag.
So let me know how you make out. I'd rather not remap this thing one more time.

Just getting to my pc, no time to play today.
Hmmm, it appears I need feathers which I don't have... Cant get vines because I don't have the knife...Never found a ladder either.
Any idea what you had with when the "vague form of rope" beyond the door became an actual rope?
As for the gems, I picked them all up sometime in the middle of this part of the game - got the silver one last and it gave me the password but I have no idea if the timing or the order make any difference..
This game is way more trouble then it will probably have been worth if it is ever finished.. but I sure would like to make it to the end.

Well, with sheer persistence, I finished this section. I'll admit it has taken hours.
The magic word appears to only work once. Saving didn't seem to work here.
So knowing that the rope is there I ignored the door until the end. And it was a rope.
I had to play all over from the very beginning of section one and the white cards. More than once.
I worked hard at not dropping things that didn't like to be dropped, like the cheese without the traps. I collected four gems in the bag, dropped the bag, and picked up the last one close to the end.
Depending on what you have, the order of things changes, since getting rid of the obstacles will get you other objects you need:
The following is what you need and so as not to really spoil it, I won't tell you where.
the short stick and the feathers at the sticky substance location; DIP short twice while carrying the feathers and make sure LOOK FEATHERS indicates they are on the short stick.
combined with the string and curved stick, SHOOT <something>.
the long stick, rags in oil and matches at the monster, but you know that.
the cheese and the traps at the rats.
the wires, iron hook, and wood pole; tie things together and TAKE <where>
The ladder gets you on the ledge.
The hammer opens the rusy lock, just OPEN, not BREAK.
The knife gets you the wires.
I think you already got the dragon figured out. Throw something imbedded in an edible object and blow him to smithereens.
There is nothing behind the spider, so I think my previous idea about being painted into a corner was not right. I just missed a few locations.
Once you get past an obstacle, explore around. On one of my playings, I found several objects that way.
So onward and upward, Amby.
This last section will probably be the worst, since if we mess up, we'll have to play this third section again.
Thank heavens I am on holidays.

Wow! You have made great progress.
I, on the other hand...
Play time tomorrow fingers crossed. I must admit that (1) I plan to make liberal use of the information you provided and (2) I am not at all sure how I feel about playing section 4 if it means replaying section 3 again...
Enjoy your holidays.
