Before I go on too much further with this game, can anyone tell me if I need the basket from the snakery BEFORE I manage to get outside the south gate?

yes. The Empress lets you take the basket if you give her something.

Use the ladder at the wall. One of the dogs finds the ladder for you.

I made it over the wall yesterday, and came away with a ring (which I used on the gatekeeper). Is there something else I should have found to give to the Empress?

Yes. So I presume you found the brick, looked up and threw it to get the ring.

There are other things to examine when you are by the Queen. There you will find what you need.

Ok, throw me a bone here people....

How do I get down on the garden side of the wall? My guess is that I need the 'line' from the tower, which I obviously can't seem to get. I show it to the guard who gets all freaked out, but doesn't do anything.

CLIMB WALL, TAKE LADDER, DROP LADDER AGAINST WALL.

To return, do the same thing.

I could use a hint about what to do next. I'm outside the city and have been to cuckoo hill and picked up 1 object. Now what? The cottage? The graveyard? The circle of darkness? I can't seem to figure out what to do in any of those locations.

Nudge away :?

Go to the graveyard. Don't drop any objects (except the ladder) before going. Answer the riddle by gving something.

The witch's cottage is for later.

Keep looking and collecting objects.

re: the riddle. I know the answer, but I don't know how to communicate it - and nothing in my possession strikes me as appropriate. Can you give me a hint about where this object is found?

Terri - What about the bull... the wrigglers in the crypt...the tent with the stars?
Any help?

Ignore the bull. It's the lion you need to pass.

The wrigglers - you need to have them when you enter the pavilion. I think they let you see the stars when the Gazer is there. Just EXAMINE STARS several times.
