The Mystery of the Java Star

#1 Post by Alastair »

Should "The Mystery of the Java Star" (http://solutionarchive.com/game/id,2112/) be included on this site? It may have puzzles but it is not a text adventure nor is it an RPG with some text adventure elements.

For those of you unfamiliar with the game the first part requires you to reconstruct a message (as you can see from the image on its entry page) and then a map by swapping pieces until the pieces are in the right order. The second part requires you to visit the right places in London, this is achieved by watching the location names flip slowly by and pressing the space bar when a place you wish to visit shows up. You should make a note of any relevant information, but in this part pressing the space bar is the sum total of your interaction with the program. The third part has you trying to find the island off which the Sea Witch sank, this means working out where to start your search and then matching the images of islands with the map you reconstructed in part one. Once you have located the island you then move a boat around the screen until it is over where you think the wreck of the ship lies, and if you are right you then get a graphical representation of the wreck around which you move your character. In other words, most of the game is graphical in nature and interaction with the program is almost exclusively through the pressing of one or two keys rather than typing normal adventure commands.

It certainly looks more like an arcade/puzzle game. So, to minimise confusion I've removed the game, until someone can persuade that it's IF.

There are a lot of borderline cases. I've just received some data for Alice in Wonderland which I seem to remember as a "sorta" adventure'ish game. I'm not sure it qualifies, but it does have a fair share of puzzles and text.
I guess we'll just have to handle it on a case-by-case basis?
