Wow Alistair, you have really made some progress.

You say the small key has two uses. One is giving it to the woman (by the garbled room, which is no longer garbled in the version you recommended). What is the other use?

The rodent - two uses - have you found a use for the stone? Since it's a sandstone, somewhere on a beach?

By the dark parts in the cave do you mean the pit (west side), and that other place you die (east side)?

A key to the padlock in the troll's room? I guess I better look again - I didn't see any padlock.

Haven't followed your others suggestions yet, so I'll get back to you.

Hi...

I have now got further in this game but I am confused with the chasm bridge - I can drop all items on the north side then cross over to the south do the bit with the tree but when I try to cross back over (with only 1 item at a time) the bridge still collapses. Also it still collapses when I have nothing carried. Is it random?

Also the items dropped on the north side cannot be picked up again.
Sometimes I can pick them up if I am wearing the cloak.

This is strange.

When in the AREA of MANY TREES you can chop a tree down here. - So in fact you can have a log on either side of the chasm.
The pool surely has more to it than just being dragged down to the bottom.
I thought maybe you could build a raft with the two logs here but have not been able to get the two logs together...
It does understand the command make raft...

I have not been able to do anything with the swamp of the tomb where the medallion is.

Thats it confused... :?

Just found out some more...

The small pool in the middle of the forest area - wait will night falls and redescribe the BOAR should be there - throw spear ot boar to kill him, Now go to the area where the vies are and chop down the vines.

The rope can be used on the tree to bring it down and also to tie the cloth to the mast.

Do you suppose the two logs and the vines could be to make a raft for the pool??

Doreen thanks for the tip about the boar.

Re. logs, I did discover that you can break a tree anywhere in the forest but if you have already created a log then the tree will fall on you with fatal results, and if you create a log in the forest then break the tree by the pool the tree will float away even if the rope was tied to it. When I took the log to the troll's storeroom and chopped it with the axe I obtained small logs, typing MAKE RAFT gave the response that I did not have enough rope, I suspect the vines solve that problem, but one problem remains - how do you get back to the swamp/pool area from the troll's rooms?

I have not had that problem with the bridge, which version of the game are you using?

When picking things up with GET ALL and you reach the limit, the game replies that you cannot pick it up, this refers to the item it could not pick up. If you check your inventory you should see that you picked up some items.

Terri, the small key is used to open the hatch before giving it to the woman. The rodent retrieves the stone (though I have yet to find a use for the stone) and gold ring for you, and you can also give it to the eagle - a poor reward for such service, I would have preferred it if you could feed the dead boar to the eagle instead but the boar seems to disappear when you kill it.

By the dark parts in the cave I meant those parts where you die if you move south, I suspect those are the regions you mentioned.

I too have not had the problem at the bridge that you had Doreen.

Thanks Alistair, about the small key. I forgot that I had already opened the hatch.

Yup, it does sound as if the vines can add to the rope. However, I have not been able to get back there after getting the axe.

I wondered about the flask (with the skull on it). Do you suppose that one should get the map by eating the mushroom (presuming once you have Penelope you will need to navigate somewhere) and then break down the door to get to the troll's room by dropping the flask? or throwing it? though it does not appear that the game recognizes "throw". Maybe one drops the flask at the pit (left side of caves), or at the other area?

At the medallion room. there is a pillar at the bottom of the chasm. I even tried dropping the rope, and tying it to the bridge in the hopes of climbing back up, but no go with this.

The creature at the lift does not seem to want anything other than the groat. So there needs to be another way to get out of the caves. The cave on the right side says to be "careful" rather than random dying. So there really should be something one can do there don't you think? Still have not found a use for the stone. Maybe dropping the stone (which if I stretch my imagination, will fill up the pit or the other area with sand)???

I also tried dropping the shell into the eagle's nest so I don't drop it, but I don't know if that gets me anywhere since I still can't get out of the medallion room. Must be some verbs we haven't tried yet.

Has anyone found a light source?

Well, I tried throwing the flask at the stone door (west of the wall by the gate beyond the pool). That didn't work. It didn't work at the two pits in the caves either.

Nor does it seem to work elsewhere.

Do you suppose that one should get the map (with the mushroom), and then throw the flask at the door to get to the troll room? Even if that should work, there is still the problem of getting out of the caves.

Has anyone found a use for the pearl necklace? Giving it to the woman gets you nothing? Using it at the medallion site?

I think I'm stuck.

I have found a light (two actually).

Making sure you are wearing the cloak and carrying nothing else, wait until dark then enter the vampire room and continue along the tunnel. From where you land when you fall through a hole, S - U (a secret place, surprised I missed this during earlier mapping) - GET TORCH (hurray!) - D - NW - W - W - S - S - S - GET LADDER - N - N - N - E - SE - SE - S - S - W - DROP LADDER - CLIMB LADDER - DROP TORCH (not sure if this is needed, but just in case the torch burns down only when you hold it) - SW - S - E - GET AXE - NW - NE - BREAK DOOR (now you have the axe it's easy, no need for the mushroom) - GET ALL (though you could leave the cloth behind) - N - NW - N - W - S - S - SE (kerspash!) - I (where did the torch and cloth go?)

Losing the torch is not such a problem as it has a limited life and another one exists, as for the cloth...

With the axe you can now chop the log and vines (in passing, Doreen how did you chop the vines?), and MAKE RAFT. Taking the raft in hand you can now explore the pool - that's right, with the raft in your inventory you just walk into the pool (I spent a lot of time trying to board or climb on to the thing, no need for you to do the same). On the pool you will discover a waterfall, a frog and some lilies - I have a program problem here though, going south from the frog and lilies location causes screen corruption, you can get the lilies and then go south without a problem but then the frog disappears so don't do this, at least not yet. Anyway behind the waterfall are some caves and a tunnel, part way along the tunnel is a crack with something in it, and at the end of the tunnel another cave containing the second torch, leave it alone for now.

Leave everything by the edge of the pool and go back for the flask, return to the tunnel behind the waterfall and THROW FLASK AT CRACK - DROP ALL (if carrying anything) - N - N - GET TORCH - S - S - E (looks familiar). If earlier on you took the cloth S - S - S - GET CLOTH - N - N - N, else go to the troll's room, also retrieve the ladder.

The frog problem, when you reach the frog and lilies DROP RAFT - L - keep repeating L until the frog moves, now move in the direction the frog moved and ignore the screen problem. Keep looking and moving until you reach a small grassy hill GET HAMMER and either move in the reverse direction to your last movement or move NW (I am not sure which), you should be back on the lily with the frog, if not move back on to the hill and try another direction. Again look and move in the frog's direction until you leave the lilies, if the raft is not here move east, be sure to GET RAFT before moving back on to the pool.

O.K.... so have now explored the caves etc and blown a hole in the crack.

Have been on the pool with the raft - I chopped the vines down with the axe.

I have seen the frog and followed him to the grassy area and got the hammer. But getting back...NO WAY I keep getting dragged down into the pool. I go from the grass NW L - L - NW - L - L - NE - DROWN!

SOMETIMES I DROWN AT THE START - L - L - S - L - L - S - DROWN.

Its VERY frustrating.

I am playing the the compilation version (with the bed instead of the garbled words)

Do I can't get back to the pool edge...

Yup me too.

I had to restart from the beginning to get the map.

I found that I am now having trouble with getting objects unless you have the cloak. And crossing the bridge with objects....aargh.

At the lily pad - the only way I could do this was to go and retrieve the shovel (presming you won't need it again). Can't remember if I was wearing the cloak or not. Anyway, DROP RAFT, L (frog goes NE), NE, LOOK, (frog goes E), E, LOOK (frog goes S), S (frog goes south again), S, TAKE HAMMER. Then I went N, W (the frog is there), LOOK (frog goes NW), NW, DROP SHOVEL, LOOK (frog goes NE). This is where I kept dying. Maybe I waited once. If I didn't die, eventually the frog went west, me too, then east, to get the raft.

Then, I found a desert but kept dying because of no water. It's also a maze so you need to have several objects to map it. Or maybe you just need the map? So I went back and retrieved the bottle (I had left it somewhere by the woman), and got back to the raft. After boarding the raft at the stump, NW, N, W, N (to where you see light from above), DROP LADDER, CLIMB LADDER takes you to the desert.

That's where I am right now.

I found that to follow the frog you need to drop everything including the raft before going south on to the lilies.

For the desert maze the map helps a bit, but you still need to employ the maze mapping technique. To save you the bother go SE - S - S - S where a whole new region awaits, I am still mapping it so have yet to resolve any problems.

P.S. Doreen would that be the "Peneless + Toot 'n' Come in" or "Flights of Fantasy Vol 2" compilation, and if the latter do you get screen corruption in the lily sequence?

Edit:
To answer my own question the "Flights of Fantasy Vol 2" version has the same problems as the original, i.e., the garbled bedroom and location beyond the gate.

Hi

To answer the question which game Iam playing it is the Peneless+Toot.

I did say earlier that I had problems with the chasm bridge whether to wear the cloak or not - then I couldn't pick up items either singly or get all.

I will have another go later.

It must be possible to carry on - or I am stuck at the pool and the fog.

Thanks for the maze tip Alastair.

I can't get the cloth past the bridge, i.e. north. Any other way to get it to the boat?

For the frog and lilies try CATCH FROG instead of L.

To get the cloth across the bridge I think that you should be carrying the cloth and nothing else. I haven't had any of the problems that have been mentioned regarding the bridge, could this be an emulator problem? (I am using ZXSpin version 0.504)

One other thing regarding the desert maze, you must be carrying the map.

Now has anyone solved the swamp or tomb puzzles, and is there any use for the bench in the valley?

Incidentally, I have found Penelope, but the tomb puzzle, at least, needs to be solved before you can rescue her.

Yes, I realized I needed the map in the desert.

The emulator I am using is Spectaculator. No I cannot cross the bridge with just the cloth, with or without the cloak, wearing it or not.

The man in the hut wants the medallion, but how to get out of the tomb is still a mystery. What did you do with the guard at the village?

I will go back and explore the swamp some more, but all I remember is dead ends.

In the desert area, going NE from the start takes you to the cool caves, so that may be one way to get to the eagle, and the tomb.

Going SE, SE, NE, takes you to the vampire bat room where you die, unless I suppose you wait for night again.

Going SE, and NE, takes you to the tunnel (where NW gets to to the cool caves through the hole and E to the bats.

So I can get the cloth north of the bridge, but then I can't cross the bridge with the raft, and of course, I can't get to this location via the route I mentioned without the raft.....aaargh

Well I managed to get the cloth north of the bridge. I wore the necklace, so try that Doreen, then I could also get the cloak.

So we are left with the swamp and tomb puzzles.

We have the stone for which we have not yet found a use.
I will try giving the necklace to the guard at the village, though maybe I should wait until you give me a hint.

Also, what to do at the pillar once you have crossed the desert?
