DRAX.png

A huge problem with Drax: As it ships, a bug prevents you taking the lantern out of the inn, meaning you can't enter the dark forest, meaning 90% of the game is locked out.

If you're prepared to hack the bug out (the game's in BASIC) to make the game functional, you'll find a completely ill-arranged but nevertheless fun RPG forest crawl. Unlike a lot of Panks' games, you can beat the monsters in this game, and almost every kill levels you up. Eventually another bug will make you insanely overpowered, but who cares when your weapon throws lightning bolts?

You don't need to explore 80% of the map to kill the main baddie and win, but for the real challenge, I challenge players to learn why the game is called 'Drax'. It is explained in the game, but the explanation is hard to find, because one room has a mislabelled exit.

Parser/Vocabulary (Rating: 2/10)

Two words, no frills.

Atmosphere (Rating: 5/10)

Screen colours, 8-bittery and a forest make for a minimal but okay atmos.

Cruelty (Rating: Cruel)

Your main enemies here are the bugs. If you remove or overcome them, this may be one of the nicest Panks games. It's still got a pile of problems, but combat works, you can map it, it has magic items, etc. etc.

Puzzles (Rating: 0/10)

Basically there are no puzzles beyond the lantern.

Overall (Rating: 4/10)

Panks's last game shows flashes of neatness, but to reach them, your first challenge is to hack the game so you can enter the forest!
