Re: Untangling Dog Stars...

FWIW, I've been trying to find some missing Apple II games and came across the Apple II Mars Mission. I can't get it to understand any of my input, but, as it's written in BASIC, I can look at the source code and see that it's not based on Dog Star Adventure and looks different to the other Mars ...

Re: Untangling Dog Stars...

I'm adding Mars Mission as another game to look at, given the synopsis on starting the game. The Dog Star/Death Star appears to have been turned into a castle in this case.

Re: Lost Apple II commercial text adventure game

The sequel game to "Colossal Cave" was most likely an unknown custom variant by a programmer at the University of Washington where it was available in the 1970s and 1980s. It is not one of the variants on the internet archives which we were available a few years ago (I checked those for rooms and ...

Re: One Step Beyond by Chiang Bros.

From Anthony:
FYI, One Step Beyond was the name of the compilation disk featuring some game. It was not a game in itself.

Re: One Step Beyond by Chiang Bros.

More importantly, how the hell do you download an Apple II disk image from the Internet Archive?

They're normally if you click on the "show all" link on the right you can spot a disk image of some time in amongst the other files. Bit of a nightmare trying to find specific Softdisks on their, due ...

Re: One Step Beyond by Chiang Bros.

Anthony says:
Chiang Brothers Software only had its work distributed through Softdisk. We always considered game development as a fun hobby to occupy our time in the early 1980's and never sought out self publishing.

Re: One Step Beyond by Chiang Bros.

Going on the listing of Space Gorn, which is given on this page...
https://archive.org/details/riag_005_Volume_115_-_Games

Space Gorn is "Chiang Mini-Adventure #1".

EDIT: I've also messaged (an) Anthony Chiang on Facebook.

EDIT2: It is him. :)

Re: One Step Beyond by Chiang Bros.

Very useful summation as part of the general Chiang Brothers research, thanks.

I've come across mentions of all of those before, except Raiders of the Lost Crown so I'll add a placeholder for that in the database. (It's been added to MobyGames since I last looked, https://www.mobygames.com/game ...

Re: Space Derelict! (type-in)

Certainly no rush! I just thought I'd flag it up as it was strange that I couldn't spot it online.

(I'm trying to avoid getting too deep into the Apple II stuff... I'm sure that there are so many games that we don't have listed! It really needs someone familiar with that scene to work through ...

Space Derelict! (type-in)

While doing a little bit of research into Jim Menick I found an unlisted game (Matinee Madness) but also a type-in from him that formed part of his "Basic Adventure and Strategy Game Design" book.

The book was published for the Apple II and TRS-80, but there doesn't yet seem to be a version of the ...

One thing that I hadn't noticed, until glancing at the listing from Man-eng today...

Re: One Step Beyond by Chiang Bros.

Interesting. Cool inlay, too.

I have been keeping my eyes peeled for any "One Step Beyond" references, but I've not come across anything yet. It's such a common phrase that it doesn't stand out as much as some titles. I have seen some of the "Rich and Famous" game series mentioned in the past ...

Re: Info for SWAN contradicts games in database

The page is technically still correct; only one game was ever released.

The other three were either in early development or were never completed. Smirking Horror/Titan Find is the only one that exists in a playable form as the Atari ST version is out there. It was never officially released, though.
