News image bug on front page

Hi,
I've noticed a bit of a bug on the front page - I'm not seeing the images from the posts on Thu Jul 08, 2010 and Sun Jun 13, 2010. Though interestingly, I can see the Hitchhiker image from the Wed Jun 30, 2010 news post.
If I try to right-click and view the image manually, the login box appears in the top right corner and I get a permission error:
Code: Select all
Access denied!
Sorry, but this function is only available to authenticated users. Please log in or, if you haven't done so already, register.
Though when I then reload the front page, it's happy that I'm logged in correctly.
Cheers,
Sam.
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Mozilla Firefox 3.6.6

Is your browser blocking session cookies?

Not as far as I'm aware. The fact that the Hitchhiker image is there implies I'm logged in OK.
Hmmm ... just restarted the browser and images have returned. Didn't need to log in again. Dunno what that means. Maybe a false alarm? I'll shout back if it happens again.
Sam.

FYI,
I'm seeing the same behaviour I reported yesterday on an entirely different laptop. This one is running Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit and Firefox 3.6.6.
Neither restarting the browser or logging in/out of the front page revealed those two images this time. Again, tho, the Hitchhiker's image is visible and, again, trying to right-click and view the problematic images results in the Access denied! message I quoted earlier. Is there anyway to compare the permissions of the working image with the broken ones on the server? There must be some difference between them ...
or perhaps something in the logs which will reveal why I'm getting Access denied!. You could look for 09:21 GMT - that's when I last tried it.
Peter.

The difference is in the session handling. Can you see any screenshots on the games or screenshots pages?

If I click on a game, e.g. Computer Concepts' Hitch Hiker, that I know has a screenshot then, yes, I can see that screenshot.
Not sure where you mean by the screenshots pages, if that's somewhere different?
Sam.

Hmmm... It seems to be because the URL is absolute, i.e.:
Code: Select all
http://solutionarchive.com/file/force,true/id,2210/
If we remove the
http://solutionarchive.com, then we can see it without logging in:

ahah ...
I've been accessing the site with
www.solutionarchive.com. If I swap to using the URL solutionarchive.com, then the pictures appear. That explains why it worked after the browser restart last night. I must have entered solutionarchive.com without the www. when I reloaded the site.

The screenshots page is the page on which all screenshots are displayed at once, obviously. However, from your analysis, it's already clear that this is a problem with session cookies. Depending on through which URL you access the site with, the cookie domain is set differently and it's not valid for the respective 'other' URL, then. This is not your fault, though, Samwise. The culprit is Jacob, who insist on using fully qualified image URLs in the tags - which he really shouldn't

I took the liberty of editing the most current post, that one should be alright now.

"Culprit"?? Pah! Is that the best you can do? I'm aiming for "Destructor of websites", no less
Really, I thought that using the full image path was the thing to do. I stand corrected. At least, judging from the thread, the error wasn't entirely trivial. So I managed to wreak some havoc all the same.

Full path, yes, but without domain name.

It's the old thing: use full absolute paths, but skip the domain name.
Especially as solutionarchive.com can be reached both by solutionarchive.com and
www.solutionarchive.com - as technically these are two totally different beasts (to both browsers, web servers and cookies).
We ought to really make one the master site and have the other perform a 302 redirection to it - it would cut down a lot of complication!
