Anyone playing modern point'n'click adventure games?

#1 Post by Gunness »

I have had a lot of fun playing Broken Sword 3 and am currently going through the new Sherlock Holmes game, which my then one month old daughter graciously gave me for my birthday. It's certainly a lot better than the old, buggy Sherlock game from Melbourne House, but whether it's as good as the two mid-nineties Sherlock games from EA is still up in the air.

Also had a go at Black Mirror but didn't enjoy it too much.
And that's all on top of some of the newer Inform games, which seem terrific but require more time and energy than I can muster at the moment :?

I think Broken Sword 3 is the english version of Baphomets Fluch 3. I´ve also played it because I liked the first parts too. I also thought about buying the new "Myst" game, because I am one of the people who like this games. :D But other than this I haven´t played many new Adventure games (but some RPG´s like Gothic & Baldur´s Gate series, very time consuming). And of course I played classics like Grim Fandango,Kyranidas etc.

And for newer Inform etc.-games(some of them I really like) I started Mulldoon Legacy some time ago,but as you mentioned you need a LOT of time and playing it alone is VERY hard. But I think it´s one of the best puzzle-based Inform games ever 8) . Maybe that I post it sometimes in the ´suggestions´-topic and see if others can be persuaded trying it out with me.

To summarize: After short "flashes" of new commercial adventure games I quickly return to old school text-adventures.

I have a stack of point and click Nancy Drew games that I occasionally play, but I always seem to go back to playing the oldies.

I agree. The Legend of Kyrandia games are great. Anyone who hasn't played them should.

The first two are terrific, but I thought the third game - Malcolm's Revenge - was somewhat tiresome. Guess they ran out of ideas.
Another fine oldie is Beneath a Steel Sky, which is available as freeware with full speech.
Guido, I kinda enjoy the Myst games as well, but a lot of the puzzles are just too obscure - running from one end of the game to the other just to see the effect of flipping some switch.

As for Nancy Drew, I'm not really familiar with either books or games. What are they like?

I couldn't agree more about Under a Steel Sky. I bought it and played it back then and totally enjoyed it.

re: Nancy Drew. The books are a series of adventures starring a spunky (ahead of her time for her day) young woman who solves mysteries. The computer games are apparently aimed at girls ages 8-14 or so. The few games I have played are point & click adventures set in rendered environments with an array of locations to explore, NPCs to talk to, and puzzles to solve.

I am a Myst addict. Have played the first three several times. Just got Myst URU: Complete Chronicles for Christmas. Can't check it out until I upgrade my entire computer and version of Windows. It even has very specific requirements for video cards that will work! But if I get upgraded then I can get Myst IV too.

Also got Aura: Fate of the Ages, which looks very much like a Myst clone, but instead of books there are rings. But again... have to get an entirely new computer system to play it.

Muldoon Legacy: I think I just played that one, but I don't remember if I finished it yet. That's the problem I run into when I have several games going at once... then if I don't get to play for awhile I forget what I was doing. (that is one of the downfalls of getting old!)

I will have to check out The Legend of Kyrandia games. Always looking for more to do. I still have to go back and finish Crobe and Fyleet too. Had a map almost done for Crobe.

I had fun playing Grim Fandango and also Twinsen's.
