FOR PETE’S SAKE

This is a very tricky game, with certain moves needing to be done in sequence. There is little rhyme
or reason for some of the moves. You have no idea why some of the objects may be useful. Part 2 has
a bit more logic to it (when you examine objects there is a hint about how to use them).
Part 1:
You begin in Matilda’s parlour. You are Julia. EXAMINE VAT, TAKE POT, EXAMINE JAM, W, EXAMINE
MATILDA (she needs ingredients), S, S, EXAMINE BOARD, EXAMINE BOOK, TAKE PAGE, READ PAGE (a car
radio, a mouldy turnip, a Chips Ahoy chip, and a cucumber sandwich). Go N, N (Matilda takes the page
and tells you to get the ingredients). Go S, E (you are told to bring another roller skate for a
reward), DOWN (you see the skate), TAKE SKATE (you can’t), DOWN, EXAMINE WALL (there is a hole),
ENTER HOLE (ignore the machine and manual), W (you see a bull and a turnip), TAKE TURNIP (you
can’t), S , EXAMINE STAND, READ ADDRESS (Millie), S, TAKE KLIM.
Go S, W, W, N, N (you see a magician), KISS MAGICIAN, ENGAGE MAGICIAN, S, S, E, E, N, E (you need to
select a gift), TAKE WATCH, EXAMINE WATCH, W, N, N, E, ENTER HOLE, SAY TO MAGICIAN “LEVITATE
BRAT”, UP, TAKE SKATE, UP (you get a teddy bear), DOWN, DOWN, ENTER HOLE, W, S, S, S, W, W, N, N,
EXAMINE CLUB, EXAMINE DOORS, EXAMINE LOCKS (they open at 10:00 pm), EXAMINE WATCH, WAIT (until 10
o’clock when the doors open), DROP MAGICIAN, N, STICK POT IN DOORS, SLEEP (you dream about Pete).
Go E, EXAMINE SLAB, LIFT SLAB, READ MESSAGE (Hurricane Howard), W, S, S, EXAMINE BODY, SEARCH SUIT
(you get a red card), W, EXAMINE SHELF, EXAMINE EXPATIATOR (you are told that there is a mole), E,
N, W, EXAMINE COUNTER (you get a flyer), READ FLYER (a handbill about funerals), E, S, E, EXAMINE
DRAIN, OPEN GRATING, GET SCRIPT, READ SCRIPT, W, S, E, EXAMINE BODY, SEARCH BODY (you get a key), W,
SAY MAN, SAY HOWARD HURRICANE TO MAN (you are told the mole’s name is George Smellie), N, HOLD
CARD (you get a whistle).
Go N, N, N, N, W, EXAMINE PANDA (you see a radio but you need something to force it out), EXAMINE
POLICEMAN (he believes his wife is planning his funeral. A diversion would help), E, E, EXAMINE
PEOPLE (you see a lottery ticket), TAKE TICKET (you can’t), LISTEN (you hear about an escaped
lion), W, N, E, ANNOUNCE LION, W, S, E, TAKE TICKET, W, DROP WHISTLE, S, S, S, S, S, E, E, N, N, N,
E, ENTER HOLE, UP, UP, W, GIVE TICKET, E (you are told you can get flowers from a florist), DOWN,
DOWN, ENTER HOLE, W, S, S, S, W, N, N, E, EXAMINE HORSE, READ SIGN (the end is neigh), W, N, N, N,
TAKE WHISTLE, N, N, W, GIVE BEAR (you get a pass).

KISS PETE (you are ushered north), EXAMINE BOMBSITE (you get a jemmy), S, W, N, SAY GEORGE SMELLIE
TO DIPLOMAT, GIVE WHISTLE, SAY TO DIPLOMAT “BLOW WHISTLE” (he’ll try again), WAIT (the
policeman rushes in), TAKE WHISTLE, SW, DROP FLYER, HOLD RADIO, NE, GIVE WHISTLE, SAY TO DIPLOMAT
“BLOW WHISTLE”, WAIT, SW (the policeman comes in and drops dead).
Go NE, S, S, W, SAY FLORIST, TAKE WREATH, E, N, W, SAY DRIVER (he needs the address of the morgue),
E, S, S, S, E, EXAMINE HORSE, READ SIGN (you may need to wait about 10 times for the sign to
change), READ SIGN (come to the stationer’s now), W, N, W (you get a card), EXAMINE CARD (it has
the address of the morgue), E, N, N, W, GIVE CARD (you agree to arrange the funeral but first you
need to find Pete), E, E, SAY PETE (he follows you), W, S, S, S, W, GIVE KEY (the coffin is on its
way to the cathedral), E, N, N, GIVE SCRIPT (David agrees to recite poetry at the funeral), N, N, W,
SAY VERGER, LIFT STAND (you can’t), SAY TO PETE “LIFT STAND”, DROP WREATH ON COFFIN.
Go E, N, SAY TO VICAR FUNERAL, S, W (the funeral takes place, and a toreador remains behind), SAY TO
TOREADOR “FOLLOW ME”, E, S, S, S, S, S, S, W, HIRE MILLIE, WAIT, E, E, E, N, N, N, SAY TO
TOREADOR “FIGHT BULL” (the ride off into the sunset), TAKE TURNIP, S, E (you see the cucumber
sandwich and Margery Fell), W, S, S, E, ASK ASSISTANT ABOUT FELL (it gives Millie an idea), POUR
KLIM IN GLASS (you get a Chips Ahoy chip), W, N, N, E, SAY TO MILLIE “SING” (Margery runs off),
TAKE SANDWICH, W, N, E, ENTER HOLE, UP, UP, W, N. You are finished Part 1. Password for Part 2 is
ICARUS.
Part 2:
You are in a restaurant. SAY WAITER (he says you look flirtatious), FLIRT WITH WAITER (you see some
pot plants), EXAMINE PLANTS, SEARCH PLANTS (you get a flint), SE, EXAMINE ROCK, LIFT ROCK (you see
boots), PULL BOOTS (you get a hint), WEAR BOOTS, NW, W, EXAMINE PLACARDS, GIVE BOOTS (you get a
flamethrower), EXAMINE FLAMETHROWER (it has a pipe to connect a gas cylinder and a hammer on top
that needs striking), E, E, EXAMINE COOKER (it has a cylinder), SAY CHEF (he says the table is
uneven), E, TAKE BOOK, CLIMB WALL (you can’t), W, FIX TABLE (the chef says he’ll help), SWITCH
COOKER OFF, DISCONNECT GAS, SAY TO CHEF “TAKE CYLINDER”, E, SAY TO CHEF “DROP CYLINDER”, FIX
GAS, HIT FLINT (the east wal crumbles).
Go E, EXAMINE TREE (it has a branch), EXAMINE BRANCH (there is a dangling rope), EXAMINE ROPE (it
can be climbed or swung on), CLIMB ROPE, WAIT (about 5 times until a motorbike zooms by), SWING ROPE
(you knock Pete off his bike), DOWN, EXAMINE BIKE (keys are in the ignition), GET ON BIKE, RIDE BIKE
(you get stuck in the mud), TAKE CACTUS (mud is too soft), W, SAY NECROMANCER (he’s looking for a
rare cactus), W, EXAMINE GATEHOUSE, EXAMINE WINDOW (you see a sunbed), BREAK WINDOW, TAKE SUNBED,
EXAMINE SUNBED (the switch is off), E, E, SWITCH SUNBED ON, DROP SUNBED, HARDEN MUD, HARDEN MUD,

COFFIN, SHUT LID (you fall into a secret room and see a snivelling gatekeeper), EXAMINE CEILING

(you find yourself on the garden path with a suspicious gardener to the west).
EXAMINE GARDENER (he’s burying something), W (ignore the flower for now), SEARCH ROSES (you get a
rosary), W, CLIMB WALL (you see a crack), EXAMINE CRACK (you get a trowel), N, SEARCH BINS (you get
an aerosol can), EXAMINE AEROSOL, EXAMINE LABEL (polarized light protection fluid), UP, S, E, DIG
(you find a home pregnancy test), E, E, E, EXAMINE BOAT (you get a watering can), EXAMINE CAN (it
has a spout and it’s presently empty), W, W, W, W, DROP CAN, WAIT (the can fills with water), TAKE
CAN, E, TAKE FLOWER, PUT FLOWER IN SPOUT, E, N, READ NOTICE ( invisible laser beams to the north).
Go N, SPRAY BEAMS, REDESCRIBE (there are laser beams to the east), CLIMB BEAMS, EXAMINE ALBUM (about
Matilda), SEARCH ALBUM (you get a photo), EXAMINE PHOTO (it shows Buck in a compromising situation),
E, EXAMINE DJ (he might move), N, EXAMINE FIREPLACE (it’s weak), WAIT (until the priest arrives),
GIVE ROSARY (you get a candle), BLOW FIRE (the priest leaves a gaslighter behind), TAKE GASLIGHTER,
LIGHT CANDLE (the wick looks like a fuse), W, EXAMINE TABLE (you get a spoon), W, W, OPEN CUPBOARD
(you get a poster), EXAMINE POSTER (of noses).
Go S, TAKE WIG, EXAMINE SWITCH (it’s on), SWITCH LASER OFF, W, EXAMINE THERMOSTAT (it’s 40
degrees), E, N, N (you see a funky record), TAKE RECORD, N (you see an odd item), TAKE ITEM, EXAMINE
ITEM (to use it, chuck it), N, SEARCH RUBBLE (you get a suppository), SEARCH RUBBLE (you get
butter), S, E, SAY TUCK (she needs something to do nose jobs), EXAMINE LIST (you see some names),
PUT POSTER ON WALL (you get plastic explosives and can seek help from Tuck), ASK TUCK ABOUT ALBERT
(he got his nose changed to look like his wife’s), ASK TUCK ABOUT BUCK (he’s courting the
Duchess of Cork), ASK TUCK ABOUT PICKERTY (he can’t take the heat), ASK TUCK ABOUT DEL (he loves
funky music).
Go E, E (you see the Vicar’s wife with a bucket on her head), SAY WIFE, REMOVE BUCKET WITH BUTTER,
SAY WOMAN (you find out that the vicar thinks that she is expecting but doesn’t know how to find
out), EXAMINE DOOR, OPEN DOOR (no key), W, S, OPEN DOOR, W (Del blocks the way), SAY DEL (he can’t
hear you because of the music), N, W, W, S, S, E, E, E, S (wait about 20 times until DJ gets up and
goes to the window. You will need to “examine dj” frequently or you will miss him getting up),
PUT RECORD ON PILE, N, W, W, W, N, N, E, E, S (Del throws off his shoes), TAKE SHOES, W (the door is
blocked by the Vicar), GIVE TEST, TAKE TROUSERS, W (the door is blocked by Buck), GIVE PHOTO, TAKE
SHIRT, W (the door is blocked by Albert), GIVE WIG, TAKE TIE, W (the door is blocked by Pickerty).
Go N, W, W, S, S, S, W, TURN THERMOSTAT UP, WAIT (about 14 turns until PIckerty shows up,
complaining about the heat), WAIT (he turns down the thermostat and goes out the window), E, N, N,
N, E, E, S (you see Pickerty’s jacket), TAKE JACKET, W (you need to be suitably attired), WEAR
SHOES, WEAR SHIRT, WEAR TIE, WEAR TROUSERS, WEAR JACKET, W (you need a flower in the buttonhole),
EXAMINE JACKET, TAKE FLOWER, PUT FLOWER IN BUTTONHOLE (you are dragged into the wingding).
You see Matilda dancing, and a sign which says “No Singing”, SING (Matilda’s glasses shatter),
DANCE WITH MATILDA (you notice a key), TAKE KEY, E, N, E, UNLOCK DOOR, EXAMINE DOOR (you see the
other side of the room with no floor), JUMP, GRAB HANDLE, EXAMINE OVEN (there is a pot of stew on
it), STICK PLASTIC ON POT, TAKE FUSE, EXAMINE FUSE (it’s stretchy), PUT FUSE IN PLASTIC, TAKE
FUSE, N, LIGHT FUSE, WAIT (the oven explodes, the roof forms into a floor and Matilda locks you in),
S, DIG WITH SPOON (you find a briefcase of Matilda’s formulas), N, W (Matilda is there), THROW
ITEM (Matilda disappears).
Go W (you see a piano), EXAMINE PIANO (you see a stool), SIT ON STOOL (you find yourself outside on
the step), S (the gatehouse door is now open), E, THROW CASE IN POOL, E, SAY RASH, GIVE GASLIGHTER,
SAY TO RASH “BURN POOL” (he agrees), WAIT, WAIT, WAIT (Rash escorts you out). You make up with
Pete, find that you’re pregnant. You are finished.
