GENESIS II by Dale & Shelley McLoughlin © 1984 Mikro-Gen You are the only crewman left alive on the earth colony ship GENESIS II which has been stolen by a hand-full of space pirates. Your cargo is a forest and a collection of rare earth animals being sent to populate a new world. It is your task to save the cargo and if possible yourself as well. To do this you must jettison the forest and animal domes and set both their automatic pilots to a homeward course. NOTES: RANDOM ELEMENTS: In this game there are many random elements, so that it's not possible to give a step by step solution. That already starts at the beginning: you start randomly at one of 4 different locations. The next unpleasant thing is that some of the objects you need are randomly distributed in the game. What's more, you don't know where and when you will encounter a space pirate, a shark in the lake, a rattlesnake or a tiger. It can happen that animals steal the wrist computer (a monkey) or the sonic screwdriver (a large exotic bird) from you. Finally, not even when you have set the countdowns, a 'real' countdown is running (in a few seconds respectively moves), so it's possible you haven't enough time to leave the dome area. LOCATIONS: because it's nearly impossible to draw a map (there are so many connections between the places), I've listed the locations (in the same order as stored in the program) and their connections with each other. Randomly distributed objects are set in brackets. There are many things to do for which you will also get points, but which are not absolutely necessary for the solution of your task. I have mentioned some of them in various locations. 01 (START 1) You are in a room full of lockers. There is a door with a bolt to the north. n to 07 Objects: green identity badge, (communicator) EXAMINE LOCKER, OPEN LOCKER => you find an oxygen mask and a small key 02 (START 2) You are in what seems to be a library because there are books on shelves all around. The door out is to the west. East is an air grill and on a pedestal in the centre of the room is a huge book. w to 16 e to 85 Objects: green identity badge, (sonic screwdriver) EXAMINE SHELVES, OPEN SAFE, HELP, ROYGBIV => you find a piece of paper and some gold coins EXAMINE BOOK, READ MAP, TEAR OUT PAGE (you have the map) 03 (START 3) You are at the end of a narrow maintenance shaft. There is a five pin socket in the wall. West is the only way to go. w to 20 Objects: green identity badge, (sonic screwdriver, blue identity badge) EXAMINE SOCKET (a small computer might plug in here) when you have the wrist computer: PLUG WRIST (A message appears on the wrist computer's read-out: INPUT ALPHA X-RAY FOUR TWO FOR EMERGENCY ESCAPE) 04 (START 4) You are in a corridor which goes north/south. There is a door to the north. n to 05 s to 13 Objects: green identity badge 05 This seems to be a sick bay. There is a glass fronted cabinet on the wall and a bed next to it. There are doors south and east. s to 04 e to 06 Objects: (blue identity badge, cigarette lighter) BREAK CABINET => you find a bottle of poison, a hypodermic syringe, a bandage GET SYRINGE, FILL SYRINGE WITH POISON, GET BOTTLE, EMPTY BOTTLE 06 Here is a bathroom. There is a bath, toilet and basin and doors with bolts to the west and south. w to 05 s to 07 Objects: (sonic screwdriver) 07 This room is full of bunk beds. There are doors to the north, south and west. n to 06 s to 01 w to 14 e to 35 EXAMINE BEDS, MOVE BED (behind one bed you can see an air-conditioning grill), UNSCREW GRILL, E Objects: (sonic screwdriver, blue identity badge, cigarette lighter) 08 You are now in a secure cell. To the north is a solid metal door and to the south, high upon the wall is a metal grill. n to 15 s to 31 Objects: rough blanket, metal bed 09 This is a recreation room with a large pool table in the middle. The door out is to the north. n to 10 Objects: pool cue, sandwich vending machine, (cigarette lighter, torch) when you have the axe: BREAK MACHINE WITH AXE, GET SANDWICH 10 You are in the refectory. There is a table and some chairs, all fixed to the floor, and doors to the north, south and east. n to 11 s to 09 e to 12 Objects: (electronic key) 11 Here is the galley. There is a large stove, cupboards all around the walls and an open door to the south. Above the stove is an air-conditioning grill. s to 10 in to 30 Objects: knife, pot of stew, (cigarette lighter) 12 You are at the west end of a corridor. There is a door to the west. w to 10 e to 13 Object: fire extinguisher, (laser gun, electronic key) 13 You are standing at a crossroads of corridors going north, south, east and west. In the floor beneath your feet is a strange panel marked 'ELEVATOR' and on a pedestal beside you are controls marked UP and DOWN. n to 04 s to 15 e to 14 w to 12 d to 20 u to 16 Objects: (communicator) 14 This is at the eastern end of a passage with a door to the east. e to 07 w to 13 Objects: (laser gun) 15 You are in a north/south corridor with a heavy steel door to the south. s to 08 n to 13 16 You are in a small circular room with doors to the north, south, east and west. Beneath your feet is a panel marked 'ELEVATOR' and at your side are controls marked UP and DOWN. e to 2 n to 17 w to 18 s to 19 u to 25 d to 13 Objects: (laser gun) 17 In this room is a computer terminal. South is the way out. s to 16 Objects: wrist computer, (electronic key, communicator, torch) EXAMINE COMPUTER (the wrist computer has a lead coming from it, ending in a five pin plug) 18 This must be a store room of some kind. There are shelves all around you and a door to the east. e to 16 in/thru to 36 Objects: oxygen cylinder, sticky plastic substance, some 2-core flex, radiation suit, length of fuse, wire cutters, (electronic key) EXAMINE SHELVES, MOVE SHELVES, IN GET RADIATION SUIT (you have put the radiation suit on) - you need it if you moving around room 29 for a longer time 19 You are in the life-support system control room. There is a console with many controls and gauges. To the north is a door. LIFE SUPPORT IS ON AUTOMATIC. n to 16 20 This is an odd circular room with narrow holes in the wall at about waist height going north, south, east and west. On the floor is a panel marked 'ELEVATOR' and beside you controls say UP and DOWN. e to 3 w to 22 n to 21 s to 23 u to 13 d to 37 Objects: (electronic key) 21 You are at the north end of a maintenance shaft. South is the only real way out, but north of you is a grill in the wall. s to 20 n to 84 Objects: (laser gun) 22 West of you in this shaft is a heavy door marked: 'NO UNAUTHORISED ENTRY'. Otherwise you can only go east. e to 20 w to 83 23 You are in a narrow shaft running north. South of you is an air-conditioning grill. n to 20 s to 33 24 You are on the bridge. Around you are various controls, including the main navigation computer. Through the panoramic windows you can see the inky blackness of space whilst you are bathed in an eerie red light. South of you is the elevator panel and there is a door to the east. e to 26 s to 25 w to 87 Object: (laser gun) when you have the communicator: COMMUNICATE (who are you going to communicate with?), NAVI (a message flashes on the navigation computer screen: current password number: [for example 5]), GEGENSCHEIN (this is no. 5 on the piece of paper) (you may now communicate with the navigation computer), COORDINATES (on a computer screen a message flashes: Earth Co-ordinates: [for example] 7764) when you are carrying the torch and the battery: INSERT BATTERY IN TORCH, LIGHT TORCH (to the west, in the dim light of the torch, you can see an air grill), TURN OFF TORCH, UNSCREW GRILL, W 25 Underneath you is a panel on the floor marked 'ELEVATOR' and on a pedestal next to you are buttons marked UP and DOWN. On a door to the south there is a sign: DANGER - AIR LOCK w to 24 s to 27 27 This is the airlock: a large semi-circular room. There is a workbench in the centre of the room, a door to the north and large double doors to the south. n to 26 s to 79 (if the main doors are open) enter pod to 78 Objects: space suit, EVA pod EXAMINE POD (it is a single seat utility pod for operations close to its mothership) OPEN POD DOOR, ENTER POD 28 You are stopped at an intermediate place in the lift shaft. There is a large sign here: DANGER - RADIOACTIVE AREA BELOW THIS DECK d to 29 u to 37 29 This is the engine room. Here are controls for the atomic motors. Beneath you is a panel marked 'ELEVATOR' and a control for UP and DOWN. u to 28 (d to 29) Object: atomic grenade 30 You are at the end of an air duct which curves away to the south. East is a grill through which you can see a room. e to 11 s to 31 31 You are in a narrow shaft which curves away to the west and goes straight to the east. North is a grill. e to 32 w to 30 n to 08 32 This is a crossroads in the air-conditioning ducts. North, east and west the tubes continue straight but the south one goes quite steeply up. n to 34 e to 33 w to 31 s/u to 57 33 You are at the eastern end of a ventilator shaft which stretches away to the west. North is a grill whilst east you can see what looks like the actual life support equipment. w to 32 n to 23 34 Here is a T-junction in the narrow shafts. You can go north, south or west. n to 36 s to 32 w to 35 35 You are in an east/west ventilator shaft. There is a grill to a room at the western end. e to 34 w to 07 36 You can only go south along the air shaft but to the north is a grill. s to 34 n to 18 (if you haven't moved the shelves in room 18: something is blocking your way) 37 You are in a small circular room with doors to the north and south. A sign on the south door says: 'CLOSE BEHIND YOU'. Beneath your feet is a panel with 'ELEVATOR' printed on it and at your side are controls marked UP and DOWN. u to 20 d to 28 n to 38 s to 39 38 From here stairs go up to the north whilst to the south is a door. n/u to 40 s to 37 39 There is a door to the north and a flight of stairs going up to the south. n to 37 s/u to 58 40 You are standing by a hole in the ground where a flight of stairs disappears downwards. Gravel paths go east and west across an earthy floor whilst there are trees all around you so that you cannot see very far. d to 38 sw to 46 e to 47 ne to 48 n to 66 w/nw to 70 s to 71 se to 72 Object: (rope) 41 You are at the western edge of the forest dome. A gravel path goes east. e to 70 n to 43 s to 44 se to 46 Object: (rope) 42 This is the eastern side of the forest dome. A gravel path goes west but otherwise there are only trees. w to 47 n to 49 s to 72 u to 50 43 This is the northern limit of the forest. Here a stream of clear water bubbles up at high pressure from the ground. All around are trees of all types. s to 66 e to 49 w to 41 se to 48 sw to 70 44 This is as far south as you can go in the forest. n to 72 e to 42 w to 41 ne to 45 nw to 71 if there's a tree on fire and you have the fire extinguisher: PUT OUT FIRE 45 Here is a small clearing in the forest. Above you is the forest dome where floodlights shine down on you. Around you are the tops of more trees, but in the north of the dome you can see a clearing whilst in the south-eastern part you can see what looks like a rocky outcrop. d to 72/42/71 51 You are just inside a cave mouth with a tunnel going east and a forest just visible outside. e to 52 w to 45 52 The tunnel goes east or west from here and to the south is a door. e to 54 w to 51 s to 53 53 This is a small store room with a door to the north. n to 52 Objects: battery, stun gun, stick of explosive, (axe) 54 This is the eastern end of a cave like tunnel. To the east is a metal wall with a door in it. w to 52 e to 55 55 This is the forest control room. Controls here include the navigation computer where you must set the earth's coordinates and a countdown for the dome's rocket motors. There is a metal door to the west and in the south wall is an air grill. w to 54 s to 56 Objects: watch, (axe) [input the earth coordinates you've got at loc. 24, for example:] 7764 (co-ordinates accepted) SET COUNTDOWN 56 You are in a narrow air duct which goes away to the south. North of you is a grill through which you can see a room. s to 57 n to 55 57 Now you are in an air duct which goes level to the north and down to the south. There is also another shaft that goes almost vertically upwards above you. n to 56 s/d to 32 u to 84 (if the rope is hanging down the steep shaft) 58 To the north stairs lead down. South is a door on which there is a sign saying: 'CLOSE BEHIND YOU'. n/d to 39 s to 59 59 You are at the centre of a huge dome spreading high above you. Around you is a flat grassy plain except to the southeast. You see some trees and to the west a gravel path. There is also a door set into the ground. w to 60 n to 76 s/se to 73 e to 75 nw to 61 sw to 64 ne to 77 d to 58 60 You are at the eastern edge of a large lake, in the centre of which you can see an island with a small building on it. From here a path goes east and also north around the lake's edge. Elsewhere there is only a dry grassy plain. e/sw to 59 n/nw to 61 s/se to 73 w to 65 ne to 76 row to 63 (if the dinghy is here) Objects: (uninflated rubber dinghy, oar) 61 You are on a gravel path which goes around the northern part of a lake. All around you is just grass but in the centre of the lake, south of you, is an island with a small hut on it. s to 65 e to 77 w/sw to 62 n/nw/ne to 76 se to 59 62 This is a small strip of land between the western edge of the dome and a lake. There is a path leading north around the water's edge and in the middle of the lake is an island. e to 65 n/ne to 61 s to 74 se to 64 row to 63 (if the dinghy is here) Objects: (uninflated rubber dinghy, oar) 63 You are on a small island in the centre of a large lake. There is a hut here with a door and high above you is the dome's glassy structure. in to 90 s/e/n/w/d to 65 ENTER BOAT, ROW to 61 64 North of here is a lake with an island in it, otherwise there is only grass all around you. n to 65 e/se to 73 w to 62 s to 74 ne to 59 65 You are in the cold waters of a lake. Above you can be seen the glass of a dome. North is an island whilst in the other directions all the lake's shores seem a long way away. SWIM N to 63 SWIM S to 64 SWIM E to 60 SWIM W to 62 66 You are stuck waist deep in a muddy, smelly bog in the middle of the forest. There are trees all around you. HELP (a space pirate hears your call for help and rescues you, but now you are a prisoner) => to 08 67 This is at the edge of a patch of hot, humid jungle. There is a lot of tangled undergrowth all around but to the north and west you can just see the flatness of a grassy plain. w/n/nw to 73 e to 93 s to 68 ne to 75 68 You are at a place where a thick jungle meets the southern edge of the dome. The going is very tough because of the dense undergrowth. w to 74 e to 69 n/nw to 67 ne to 93 69 Here is the eastern edge of the dome. To the east you can see a belt of green trees. e to 68 n to 64 w/nw to 62 ne to 73 75 This is the eastern edge of the grass plain. South of here is a jungle. s to 69 w to 59 n to 76 sw to 73 nw to 77 76 You have reached the northern limit of the grassy plain where it meets the dome structure. s to 59 e to 75 w to 62 se to 77 sw to 61 77 You are standing on a sea of dry yellowing grass. Above you is the glass of the dome itself with its hot, bright spotlights. w to 61 e/se to 75 s to 73 n/nw to 76 sw to 59 78 You are inside an EVA pod. There is a small window in front of you along with many controls and displays. There is a door out behind you. Some of the controls include MAIN DOOR OPEN/CLOSE and a joystick for movement in any direction. out to 27 (if the pod door is open) CLOSE POD DOOR, OPEN MAIN DOOR: s to 79 79 You are now outside the space-craft, floating in the black vacuum of space just ahead of the pod bay doors. Above you can be seen a red glow from the flight deck windows. w/n/e to 82 d to 81 u to 80 in to 27/78 80 You are in space above the spacecraft. d to 81 u to 82 81 You are in space underneath your ship. u to 80 d to 82 82 You have become lost in deep space and are now so disorientated that you cannot see your own ship. 83 You are deep in the heart of the spacecraft's workings. This is the computer system itself, one of the most advanced ever made. There is a small key hole in the wall and a door to the east. e to 22 84 This is the end of an air duct which goes steeply down to the west. South of you is a grill and there is a hook in the wall. d/w to 57 s to 21 if you have the rope: TIE ROPE (the rope is hanging down the steep shaft) 85 You are in an air shaft. West is a grill to a room and east the duct goes steadily upwards. w to 02 e/u to 86 86 This is a T-junction in the air system where a north/south duct meets one going to the west. n to 87 s to 88 w/d to 85 87 This is a bend in the ducts. You can go south from here or east is a grill to a room. s to 86 e to 24 88 You are in a narrow shaft which disappears into the distance to the north but is completely blocked by water as it goes down to the south. n/u to 86 89 This is a very narrow tube-like shaft. Set into the ceiling above you is a grill, but where the duct goes down to the north it is blocked by water. u to 90 90 This is the animal dome's control room. It is here that you must set the coordinates for earth. There is also a countdown for the dome's rocket motors. The door out is to the west. There is a grill in the floor. w/out to 63 d to 89 [input the earth coordinates you've got at loc. 24, for example:] 7764 (co-ordinates accepted) SET COUNTDOWN 91 You are in space at the very rear of your ship. You can see its atomic motors just in front of you. 92 You are underneath a small bridge through which a stream flows from north to south. u to 47 n to 48 s to 46 e to 42 w to 40 if you have the empty bottle from 05: FILL BOTTLE WITH WATER (you gain points, what is this good for?) 93 You are deep inside a jungle of dense tropical vegetation. w/nw to 67 s/sw to 68 n to 73 e/se/ne to 69 OBJECTS: Some objects can be found in fixed places, namely - at 01, 02, 03 or 04 depending where the game starts: green identity badge (allows you access to certain areas) - at 01 when OPEN LOCKER: oxygen mask (CONNECT MASK TO CYLINDER to use it), small key (to open some doors) - at 02 when EXAMINE BOOK and TEAR OUT PAGE: map (shows a part of the ship) - at 02 in the safe: piece of paper (holds the passwords for the navigation computer), some gold coins (useless) - at 05 when BREAK CABINET: bottle of poison, hypodermic syringe, bandage (BANDAGE LEG if a space pirate has shot you in the leg) - at 08: rough blanket (THROW BLANKET AT PIRATE to escape without killing him or being killed or captured) - at 09: pool cue (useless), sandwich vending machine, when BREAK MACHINE WITH AXE: sandwich - at 11: knife (to kill space pirates), pot of stew (EAT STEW when you are getting very hungry) - at 12: fire extinguisher (to put out the fire in the forest area) - at 17: wrist computer (for emergency escape at 03) - at 18: oxygen cylinder (belongs to the oxygen mask), sticky plastic substance (for repairing the dinghy), some 2-core flex (not needed), radiation suit (needed if you stay longer in the engine room [29]), length of fuse (to detonate the explosive), wire cutters (not needed) - at 27: space suit - at 29: atomic grenade (not needed; of you THROW GRENADE it destroys the whole spacecraft) - at 53: battery (for the torch), stun gun (useful to defeat dangerous animals or space pirates), stick of explosive (to blow open the safe) - at 55: watch (it doesn't seem to work) Randomly distributed objects are (the list of rooms may not be complete): - communicator (at 01, 13 or 17) - sonic screwdriver (at 02, 03, 06 or 07) - blue identity badge (at 03, 05 or 07) - allows you access to certain areas - cigarette lighter (at 05, 07, 09 or 11) - needed to light the fuse joined to the explosive - torch (at 9 or 17) - to discover the grill at 24 - electronic key (at 10, 12, 17, 18 or 20) - to open some doors - laser gun (at 12, 14, 16, 21 or 24) - rope (at 40, 41 or 49) - useful to go up from 57 to 84 or to strangle a space pirate - axe (at 53 or 55) - to destroy the sandwich vending machine and get a sandwich or to kill a space pirate - uninflated rubber dinghy, oar (at 60 or 62) - to reach the island (63) when repaired These objects are essential when you want to complete your task: green & blue identity badge (to get access to some locations) sonic screwdriver (to open the grills and most of the doors) laser gun (the most effective weapon to defeat the pirates [FIRE LASER AT PIRATE], also opens some doors) the piece of paper (because of the passwords) communicator (needed at the bridge [24] to get the coordinates) wrist computer (for emergency escape, PLUG COMPUTER at 03) DOORS: Some of the doors you can simply open with OPEN DOOR, other doors need a key (small key or electronic key), but when you have the screwdriver, you can OPEN DOOR WITH SCREWDRIVER and the keys are not required. There are also some metal or steel doors you can open with the laser gun. If there is more than one closed door in a room, you have to indicate which one you want to open (e.g. OPEN SOUTH DOOR). AIR-CONDITIONING GRILLS: There are various locations with a grill you can go through to reach another room: 02 <> 85, 07 <> 35, 08 <> 31, 11 <> 30, 18 <> 36, 21 <> 84, 23 <> 33, 24 <> 87, 55 <> 56, 89 <> 90 You need the screwdriver and have to UNSCREW GRILL. The grill at 24 you will only see when you are entering with a lit torch (collect the torch and the battery, INSERT BATTERY IN TORCH and LIGHT TORCH). To discover the grill at 07 you have to move a bed and at 18 the shelves. THE SECURE CELL (08): When you're caught by a space pirate and you find yourself in the cell, there are 3 options to escape: 1. CALL GUARD (a guard has come into the room), [THROW BLANKET AT GUARD - only to gain 100 points], N 2. if you have the screwdriver: MOVE BED, STAND ON BED, UNSCREW GRILL, S 3. if you have the laser gun: OPEN DOOR WITH LASER, N THE ANIMAL DOME'S CONTROL ROOM (90): To get to the island in the lake (63) you can either choose the risky way of swimming (from 65; don't do this when you spot the fin of a shark) or you can use the dinghy you find at the edge of the lake. You have to repair it with the sticky plastic substance from the store room (18): EXAMINE DINGHY, REPAIR DINGHY WITH PLASTIC, INFLATE DINGHY, GET OAR, ENTER BOAT, ROW THE SAFE (at 02): EXAMINE SHELVES (behind some books is a safe) - you have 2 options to open it: 1. OPEN SAFE (you can't), HELP (the name of your computer might hold the key), ROYGBIV (it worked, you opened the safe) 2. If you want to blow open the safe, pick up the length of fuse (from 18), the stick of explosive (from 53) and the cigarette lighter, then CONNECT FUSE TO STICK, DROP STICK, LIGHT FUSE, LOOK (the safe is open) The piece of paper you find in the safe holds the passwords you will need at the bridge (24) to communicate with the navigation computer. They are numbered line by line, not column by column. HOW TO SOLVE THE GAME: This is the shortest way to finish your task - without gaining extra points for doing unnecessary things. First, GET GREEN BADGE and then look for the blue badge, the screwdriver, the laser gun, the communicator and the wrist computer. You should find these objects around the rooms where the game starts or at the section with the elevator. Also take the pot of stew (in case you're getting very hungry) and the bandage (to BANDAGE LEG if a space pirate has shot you). Once you have collected all these objects, go to the library (02), EXAMINE SHELVES (behind some books is a safe), OPEN SAFE (you can't), HELP (the name of your computer might hold the key), ROYGBIV (it worked, you opened the safe; you find a piece of paper and some gold coins), GET PAPER, READ PAPER (written on the paper are 16 passwords). Then go W, D, D, E to the maintenance shaft (03), EXAMINE SOCKET (a small computer might plug in here), PLUG WRIST (a message appears: INPUT ALPHA X-RAY FOUR TWO FOR EMERGENCY ESCAPE). Go on W, U, U, U, N to the bridge (24), COMMUNICATE (Who are you going to communicate with?), NAVI (a password number is displayed), enter the appropriate password (you may now communicate with the navigation computer), COORDINATES (you get the earth coordinates). S, D, D, D, D, OPEN NORTH DOOR, N, U, SW, D, SWIM N (on a small island), OPEN DOOR WITH SCREWDRIVER, IN (the animal dome's control room), enter the earth coordinates, SET COUNTDOWN.
