WEREWOLVES AND WANDERER Ballantine Books (by Tim Hartnell), 1983 ======================================== Solution by Exemptus - September 2022 Overview and general hints: --------------------------- This type-in BASIC game is a text-based RPG based on random combats. There are no puzzles and no objects, except for optional buy-in equipment the player can purchase in the old D&D tradition. The idea is to enter a castle, gather as much treasure as possible, survive the random fights, and escape the other way. There is not really a lot to do. The game is very short and this serves its purpose as a teaching aid for beginners to learn how to sketch a crude text RPG in Microsoft BASIC. This skeleton game was expanded by the author and transposed into a sci-fi scenario as "Aftermath of the Asimovian Disaster", not that the game gains a lot by that. The player can enter commands, but these are single letter entry and as follows: N, E, S, W, U, D: The usual directions. P: Pick up treasure F: Fight an enemy R: Run from a fight I: Take inventory (and possibly buy something) T: Show score and tally of killed monsters M: Use the magic amulet (random teleport) H: Help (lists commands) The player begins with a random amount of strength and money. If money is too low, it pays to restart until it allows buying the suit of armor, torch and sword right away, which sets us back $85. Any leftover money should be invested on food. Fights are random and the player does not have any control over them. It is possible to Run from a fight, although it won't always work. Walkthrough: ------------ [The walkthrough just consists of walking to the end room while surviving the random fights on the way. First, we need a light, as all rooms are dark] I [Inventory and call supply android] 1 [Buy Flaming Torch] [If you have the cash, also buy at this point items 3 (sword) and 6 (suit of armor). If not, just pick up all the cash you see on the way and buy these as soon as possible. Any leftover cash should be spent on food. If you come across any enemies, you can try always running first; if you are forced to fight, then you are, but mind that running takes away some of your energy, so it might be preferable to fight anyway. Of course, I will assume all fights end up with a victory.] E S S E U N E S E N [This is an automatic lift, and you descent to the ground floor again] E [End of game.]
