THE PETTIGREW CHRONICLES, PART 4: THE CONCLUSION
Shards Software, 1984
=====================

Solution by Exemptus - May 2023

Overview and general hints:
---------------------------
This last part is, like Part 2, a set of riddles, mixed with some sequence mini-
games. It is considerably easier than the former, to the point of being a bit
pointless, but I'm includign a solution for the sake of completeness.

Walkthrough:
------------
[Scene 1:
We arrive in Paris and find Pierre Dupont climbing the Eiffel Tower, with the
clear intention to commit suicide. We must talk him out of it. This part
requires the player just to type the sentences that are displayed, one after
another, as quickly as possible. I'm not including any more details because even
poor typists will find it easy to rescue Pierre after the fifth of sixth
sentence (out of ten). We are given a red key and the code ESCARGOT.]

[Scene 2:
We are sent to Germany to find a Herr Schwarz in Stuttgart, with the indication
he's the best barber in town. There are only two barbers in town, both called
Schwarz: Heinz and Franz. Heinz has unkempt hair and beard, while Franz is
well-groomed, and we are asked who is our contact and why.]

HEINZ [Since he's the one that cuts Franz's hair]
FRANZ CUT HEINZ [Some other answers to "why" are accepted, but this one works]

[We are given a blue key and the code SCHWEIN.]

[Scene 3:
We are sent now to Italy, where we approach from the North a sign saying "This
Way" to the W and "Not This Way" to the E, but the diary told us that one of the
directions is false and travelling there means certain death. Which direction do
we choose?]

S [We find a greek key and the code PISA]

[This is also an old chestnut. Since only one direction is valid, the E sign
can't be false, since then either direction would be good; and if the W sign
were false, neither direction would serve. Therefore the only other direction
left to us is S, since we approached from the North.]

[Scene 4:
We find ourselves in Turkey, before the huge Gate of WI. The diary says we must
enter it in order to reach our goal. We are given the clue:
My 1st is he who started it all
My 2nd is in she who acted the fool
My 3rd by Mr Flag can be read
My 4th is the word to wake up the dead
My 5th is the place where Barry you saw
My 6th is the man behind the red door
The word will take you ahead
NOW GUESS THE WORD TO PASS THRU]

PACKER [P-Pettigrew, A-Annie, C-Cragameeta, K-Kulfatyn, E-Euroconk, R-Rhythma]

[These are references to Part 3. Now we are given the code PACKER as well.]

[Scene 5:
Abdul's maze, which is a timed sequence - you must get 5 diamonds in a maze
before the time runs out and without touching more than 5 of the green
barriers. This is easy enough. When done, we are given the code PORKY.]

[Scene 6:
At the Safras Caves in Israel. A sign above the door reads: "Use your keys with
care / Which sequence do you intend? / You have but three chances". We have
three keys (red, blue, green) and need to find the right permutation.]

RGB [Which is the order the colours appear in the ROYGBIV rainbow sequence]

[We are given the code KEYNOTE]

[Scene 7:
We must pass through the labyrinth and reach the purple room. This is trickier,
since the cursor keys are re-mapped every few seconds accoring to the compass
seen on screen, so we must press the key that matches the right direction. The
time limit is tight, but with a bit of perseverance it is possible to do it. We
are rewarded with the code NEEDLE.]

[Scene 8: THE SAFRAS SWORD
A graphic of the Safras sword sheathed in its resting place is shown (as seen in
Part 2). We are asked "What next". There are no further clues.]

SHARDS SOFTWARE [And that's it]

[End of game.]
