Amazing at the time, KQ1 was the seed for a whole sub-genre which peaked commercially ten years later. Impeccably presented given the means at the time, but puzzles are (ironically) its weakest point: too rough, unfairly clued (the infamous gnome had to be tweaked in later versions) and dependent on random discovery. The game also relies too much on finicky controls and cheerily dispensed death. Despite all this, King's Quest can be enjoyed in its original form (the PCjr version) and its historical impact can't be overstated.
