Synopsis

Notes

This isn't really a traditional text adventure, as inputs are limited to directions only. It does have a fairly interesting combat system, though, where you have the option to try and bribe the monsters (with a portion of the hoard of treasure you've collected so far) rather than fight them. That, and the collection of magic words to aid you in combat, perhaps makes it different enough from the standard dungeon crawler.

Michael K. Bonnycastle, of Ontario, Canada, wrote several similar titles, such as Stygian Tombs. Michael was a well-known personality in the early North American Commodore scene, as the president of TORPET/TPUG; "the world's largest Commodore users group".

As mentioned in the later C64 version of the game, this adventure (and Stygian Tombs) was originally written for an 8K Commodore PET and so likely dates from the very early 1980s. A Jim Butterfield article from TPUG in 1985 makes reference to both Stygian and Caves being early forays into producing an adventure for the PET.

1981 is the current placeholder date as that is currently the earliest mention of their appearance on the "TPUG-SIMLTN 1" disk; see TORPET February 1981.
