Short solution
--------------
Turn the handle on the machine to progress any further.
Get the amulet so you can travel to the city.
Get the iron key to gain access to the cottage.
Get the torch and fill it with oil to see in the dark.
Get the coin so you can exchange it for the rod later.
Get the holdall so you can carry more.
Get the vial to get you access to the west tower from the top of the grand staircase.
Get the oars from the top of the west tower to row the boat to safety.
Get the umbrella so you can get into the waterfall.
Wave the rod at the waterfall while in possession of the oars to magically reveal a boat and escape
to safety.
Objects
-------
AMULET This will allow you to pass into the city, north of your starting location.
COIN Give to old man in exchange for the rod.
HOLDALL Helps you carry more.
IRON KEY Needed for access to the cottage.
LAMP Rubbing it takes you to a random location. It's unnecessary.
OARS Needed to row the boat away from the island at the end of the game.
PAPER Read it for a clue in Morse Code.
TORCH Needed to help you in the dark.
UMBRELLA Gets you safely under the waterfall.
VIAL Helps you through closed doors.
DEAD RAT, GOLD BAR, RULER, SILVER CROWN etc are all red herrings
