Waxworks (Waxworks_Hints.txt)

Hints for Waxworks by Digital Fantasia (BBC Micro version)

If you don't know, or can't work out, the answers to the questions set in the Grand Hall
displays, you can just use trial and error - there seems to be no penalty for wrong answers, as long
as you get them right eventually. Both right answers are necessary - without them vital objects are
missing, though for no obvious reason (although, given the denouement, the authors can always say
"Nu, ohg vg jnf nyy n qernz." [ROT-13 to avoid very minor spoiler] to queries about
logicality).

It is generally a good idea to examine things more than once.

Sometimes it is best to do the opposite of what a notice tells you.

If you play the flute (found by examining the Pied Piper figure), you can get the sewer rats to
follow you. However, this seems to be a rather elaborate red herring, as you can't get them to
do anything useful as far as I can see. In fact, you don't need to encounter the sewer rats at
all.

Another red herring is that you can get a second coin from the telephone, but inserting it in the
machine doesn't result in a prize.

If you unlock the grid in the washroom, then drop the key, the grid re-locks itself. Fortunately
this is not a problem, as you don't need many items in your inventory at this point.

The old lamp is very useful, indeed vital - if you rub it you are transported to Aladdin's cave
(from any other location, as far as I can tell). However, if you rub it in the cave you are
transported back to wherever you were when you last rubbed it; this makes the cave a useful place to
store items which are only needed in one place, and which otherwise would be a nuisance to carry
around (such as the beam).

The torch can be turned off, but it seems to have an unlimited lifespan, so this action is
unnecessary. However, it has the odd property that, if you drop it, it switches itself off, so
don't drop it anywhere that it's otherwise dark, or you may have to restart.

The action needed to deal with the zombie is not guaranteed to work first time - you have three
chances, after which it kills you.
