The CIA (Create Interactive Adventures!) engine published by Squid Productions in 1998, was a simple Shareware adventure system for DOS. It was created by Rick Lundrigan with QA help from Brian Bentley. It had several limitations, such as a maximum of 35 rooms and 35 characters, as well as limitations of the number of inventory items and play responses per room.
TextWorld was an upgraded version of CIA. It was programmed by White Divine (Mickey Crocker), initially in 2001, and it overcame some of the original version's limitations; such as increasing the room limit to 500.
