Synopsis

Plot

"The game is set in the UK just before, during and perhaps after a Nuclear war. The object of the game is to imagine that you are an average person living in a slightly better than average house in a small town.

What you choose to do about the approaching disaster is almost entirely up to you. The game can be played by anyone from Survivalists to potential suicides. However, it is aimed towards those who would want to build their own shelters.

If at any stage you think you ar ready for the bombs, then you can enter the following command: READY FOR THE BOMBS. That will save you a lot of unnecessary waiting."

Notes

A rather bleak, but technically realistic game, that allows you to choose to lose. Even when you "win" the game by surviving, the game will tell you that ultimately you either eventually die from leukaemia or cholera. The initial title page of the game sets the tone:

HOW TO DIE IN THE NUCLEAR AGE.
In the event of a nuclear attack on this country, your chances of survival would be slim. Cities would be levelled, the countryside devastated. Millions would perish immediately, and the suffering of those who survived would lead them to envy the dead.

great game. i've spent half an hour trying to turn the tap on.

Another of these bleak 1980s games that dealt with nuclear war by giving you no chance of winning. The name of the game is, in fact, a lie: you will not survive. There is no way (except QUIT) to end the game that doesn't involve your death. Nor is there any "better" ending that can be seen to be a relative win: you will lose this game.

By the way, you turn the tap on using "TAP ON". You can't use the verbs "TURN" or "SWITCH"; they're recognised, but not for the tap :-/

There's a bug which might be handy if you become trapped. If you "RING" in any location you'll be transported to the neighbour's front door.

So, *can* you survive? Judging by the earlier comments, this sounds like a big "no" ;) Then again (SPOILER ALERT) they did plan for a sequel called The Survivor, so...
