Notes
Published by as a type-in game for the PET in
Cursor magazine, issue 27, August 1981, instructions p. 2. (
Cursor was a program subscription service issued on cassette and was published by Ron Jeffries of The Code Works) The authors was given as Mary Jean Winter and the program was edited by Andy Stadler. In game, the author is given as M. J. Lansing; the Lansing may be a maiden name or simply be a geographical reference to the city in Michigan where the author was based.
The game also appeared as a type-in the first Commodore 64 Fun and Games book by Ron Jeffries, Glen Fisher and Brian Sawyer; published by Osborne/McGraw-Hill in 1984; pp.43-52. The game itself is credited to Mary Jean Winter there and the listing states (c)1983 The Code Works.
There are many other unofficial ports to the Commodore 64 and VIC-20. Some of the ports have fanciful names like Explore the Morloc's House.
A PC port, from 1981, by Tom Croley, was entitled The Miser's House; this is another common name for the unofficial ports.
The original game has also been translated to Dutch.
In 2013, John Rumpelein reprogrammed the game in object-orientated PHP; see here.
A short but interesting and classic game for the Commodore PET.
Short and easy design, few dangers, very traditional. Adequate for beginners. The PC version is badly typed, but fortunately not broken.
