It has been nearly a month since your great uncle died. He had been a strange old man, and you had only met him once when you were nine.
Although your great uncle was a generous man with no children, you never expected that he would name your parents in his will. Your family received everything the old man had owned. So, after the legal formalities were over, you packed up your small New York apartment and moved into your great uncle's manor in west Georgia.
The drive was exhausting and took two days. When you finally arrived, the sky was dark and everyone was in a bad mood and cramped from sitting. The house loomed like a mountain black against the sky. You had been told it was a large house, but, in the twilight, the house looked as huge as a castle. It had seemed strangely old-fashioned to you that your uncle had kept a butler and a housekeeper, but you now understood why. A house like this would be impossible to live in without servants to keep the place in order.
The next morning, you made a beeline for your uncle's massive library. There had been no space for books at the apartment, and you have always loved books.
