Welcome! You are about to enter one of the most famous and well loved fantasy worlds in the annals of fantasy fiction: J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth.
Melbourne House, in association with the Tolkien estate, are proud to present the Lord of the Rings adventure game. The background to the Lord of the Rings includes some events with which a player of the game The Hobbit will be familiar.
This is the first game in a series of three, which deals with the material found in Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Subsequent games will deal with the stories covered in the next two volumes in the series, The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
In the Lord of the Rings adventure game, you will be able to play the role of one of the four Hobbits: FRODO, SAM, MERRY and PIPPIN. FRODO bears a magic ring of power, a ring which, in the hands of the DARK LORD, could cause the destruction of all that you hold dear. You will need all of the cunning and luck at your disposal to complete your quest and survive.
In playing this adventure game, you in effect assume the role of the characters from J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy world. You must detail out the actions that you will perform, your reactions and movements, and the computer will perform them accordingly.
Best of luck, my furry-footed friend. The fate of the entire world of Middle Earth rests upon you alone, but don't let that pressure you...

I used to own an original copy of this game when I was young, but I hardly played it. The game was slow and every time you die you had to load a saved game from tape which was very cumbersome. Apart from that I didn’t like the fact you had to eat a lot. Luckily nowadays I can use an emulator and the restoring bit is much faster. Also I checked inside the game and found some pokes which make it a lot easier to solve because you don’t have to eat to every 40 turns (you just have to enter them every 255 turns). I’ve uploaded them in the hint file. I made maps from part 1&2 and have uploaded them as well. It seems the solution from Dorothy is incomplete while escaping the mines of Moria. When I compared my map with her solution it seems there fails a portion. So for the first time in 30 years I actually played the game and well the puzzles are not that great, but I enjoyed mapping it.
Less chaotic than Sherlock, but taxing anyway. In most platforms the game is far too slow, to the point of driving the player to moroseness. The gimmick of having several characters to play is not used at all (save for Merry being the only one knowing how to swim, and this is not even needed), bugs abound again, and ambience is broken by indulging in self-parody items such as photographs or heavy metal orc bands. This would be apt in "Bored of the Rings" but this game tries to be serious and follow the books. Difficulty comes only through randomness, not puzzles. Play it if you must, but don't expect much.
